Abstract:
Owing to the excellent mechanical properties, processability, thermal stability and environmental friendliness, polylactic acid (PLA) has showed numerous applications in medical devices, electronic products, and buffering, etc., but hampered by its intrinsic flammability, accompanied by release of a lot of heat and toxic fumes during combustion. Herein, aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) modified MXene hybrids (AHP-Ti3C2Tx) were synthesized via salt-forming reactions and hydrogen bonding induced assembly, which were then incorporated into PLA in combination with silicon microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (SiAPP). Due to the synergistic effect between SiAPP and AHP-Ti3C2Tx, the fire resistance of PLA composites has been greatly improved. For instance, the peak of heat release rate, total heat release and peak of smoke production rate of the PLA composite containing 13.0 wt% SiAPP and 2.0 wt% AHP-Ti3C2Tx decreased by 60.2%, 50.6% and 44.3%, respectively. The synergistic charring function between Ti3C2Tx and SiAPP, and the thermal oxidation and "tortuous path" effect of Ti3C2Tx nanoplates together with the capture effect of SiAPP are responsible for a significant improvement in the fire resistance of the polymer material.
