美国威斯康星大学十分重视大学在社会文化和经济发展中的地位与作用,在查理斯·R·范海斯(Charles R·vanhise)任校长时期提出了著名的＂威斯康星思想＂(Wisconsin Idea).威斯康星思想明确地把服务社会作为大学的重要职能,提出大学的基本任务.
