A Rhetorical Study of Koutouchan in Literary Works from the Perspective of van Dijk's Theory of Context
Translated Abstract
The paper explores the pragmatic characteristics of Koutouchan, the Chinese equivalent of pet phrase, in literary works in terms of van Dijk's Theory of Context. Socio cultural context determines what kind of Koutouchan and how it is produced by a particular figure in a literary work. The operating mechanism of Koutouchan is subject to its context by which the author manipulates the Koutouchan to ex plicitly communicate his attitude and critique about social realities. Finally, the creative use of Koutouchan plays a positive role in portraying the flat figures and deepening the theme.
