Abstract:
An important contribution of Chinese parteners to the cooperated FOREST DRAGON 2 project in the first two years is the research on the applications of L-band ALOS PALSAR on forest/non-forest mapping and biomass estimation. In this paper, two aspects of the research are introduced, namely forest/non-forest mapping and forest stand biomass estimation by the synergistic use of ALOS PALSAR FBD data and airborne Lidar data. An rule based classification method was developed for the forest/non-forest mapping for the heterogeneous regions in south China exploiting the new features of ALOS PALSAR such as long-term InSAR coherence at L-band, polarimetric intensity ratio between HH and HV. Forest stand above ground biomass estimation in rugged terrain area from ALOS PALSAR was carried out taking the Lidar-derived biomass as prior knowledge. The backscattering coefficient increased with the increase of forest biomass and a logarithm equation can be used to describe the relationship, while no relationship was found between the SAR backscattering coefficient and the biomass at plot level. Higher biomass estimation was also achieved by using multi-temporal regression mode.
