Abstract:
This paper investigates the potential of ENVISAT ASAR data for rice crop mapping in Fujian Province, where the agricultural fields are cracked. The ASAR data with VV and HH polarization acquired between two acquisition dates over the whole rice growth season were used. The study area is located in Fuzhou, Fujian province, China. After analysis the backscatters of VV and HH polarization in the two dates during each rice growth season, a backscatter change index (BSCI) combining the VV and HH backscatters of the two dates was calculated. The BSCI value of rice field is much higher than those of other land covers. A method using the BSCI was proposed, which was a fast rice crop mapping method. The accuracy of rice field mapping in three rice seasons was all promising high.
