Abstract:

This paper purposes on extending the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) on temporal simulation and prediction of direct sunlight on buildings and shading areas due to buildings at certain time period. The 3D building models required for the GIS based sunlight analysis were created in Google SketchUp 8, and consequently a sunlight analysis tool was developed based on the 3D spatial analysis tools and ModelBuilder in ESRI ArcGIS 10. The result of the case study evidences that by providing the 3D building models and proper time settings, the proposed tool can efficiently and effectively simulate the direct sunlight conditions of buildings at different time period.
