Abstract :

Abstract :
Green innovation has been attracting much attention from academia and practice, but the influence of religion as an important informal institutional factor has not been fully investigated in existing studies. Taking Chinese listed companies from 2008 to 2019 as a sample, this study attempts to examine the relationship between religious atmosphere and corporate green innovation performance. The empirical results indicate that a religious atmosphere (Buddhism and Taoism as a whole) can significantly improve corporate green innovation performance, particularly high-quality green innovation. The positive association between religion and green innovation performance is attenuated by pervasive formal institutions (i.e., environmental regulation), indicating that there is a substitutive effect between religion and formal institutions. We also find that Taoism mainly supports these results, while Buddhism has a limited impact, showing that there is a heterogeneous effect between different religions. We further find that the positive impact of religious atmosphere on green innovation performance is more pronounced in low-governance enterprises and low-polluting industries. This study contributes to research on the antecedents of corporate green innovation and the consequence of religion, which is of great significance to the value of religion in business practice.

Abstract :
The expanding practice of accepting patents as collateral for loans has increasingly caught academic attention and the value of a patent has been verified as an important determinant. In this paper, we focus on validity and uncertainty in the context of innovative startups' patent pledge valuation, arguing that their interplay poses a timing dilemma to lenders. Our empirical tests utilized a database of Chinese innovative startups and their patents for the period 2008-2015. Using patent age as a proxy for time, our findings demonstrate that timing dynamically influences the collateralization potential of a patent. The results also suggest that lenders can use information cues from third parties, such as venture capital backing from the market and high-tech certification from the government, to cope with this timing dilemma, however in different ways. Thus, we advance existing literature on startups' debt financing by expanding the range of patent collateralization determinants to include dynamic multilevel factors. Plain English Summary The timing dilemma in innovative startups' patent collateralization for loans: the dynamically changing likelihood of a patent being accepted as loan collateral and different roles of information cues from third parties in coping with this dilemma. This study theorizes a timing dilemma that lenders confront when weighting in patents' validity legal lifetime and the uncertainty of patent valuation for innovative startups proposing patents as loan collaterals. Using a unique panel dataset of Chinese startups and their granted patents, multilevel analyses supported a dynamic view and showed that the age of a valid patent has an inverted U-shaped relationship with the likelihood of this patent being accepted as loan collateral. Being invested by venture capital or certificated as high-tech enterprise by government can accelerate acceptance by lenders. Thus, the principal implication of this study is that small innovative businesses should actively seek to obtain government certification and venture capital investments because this will not only improve their legitimacy and help them obtain equity financing but may also help them obtain more capital from debt investors through using patents as loan collaterals.

Abstract :
Drawing on signaling theory, peer effect, and the awareness-motivation-capability (AMC) framework, we examine the role of strategic emerging industries (SEI) firms in raising the awareness and motivation of non-SEI firms' R&D activities, including gaining government R&D subsidies and adopting internal R&D investment, while considering the moderate effect of non-SEI firms' capability factor. Based on the data of Chinese listed firms from SEI and non-SEI, the empirical results reveal that (a) the number of SEI firms funded by government R&D has an inverted U-shape relationship with the amount that non-SEI firms gain from government R&D subsidies, and has a positive relationship with the investment of non-SEI firms on internal R&D. (b) The financial performance of SEI firms funded by government R&D motivates non-SEI firms to gain government R&D subsidies and invest in internal R&D. (c) These relationships are strengthened by the relative scale of the non-SEI firms.

Abstract :
Although teamwork shows stronger innovation ability than individuals and this advantage has been increasing over time, the negative effects of larger teams also appear as the number of inventor members increases. This study discusses the double-edged sword role of inventor teams in innovation quality at two extremes: the high quality and the low quality. We argue that, inventor team size influences innovation quality because diversity works in the evolutionary process of innovation, but different types of diversity play distinct moderating roles in these relationships. Using patent data from the US pharmaceutical industry, empirical results show that there is an inverted U-shape relationship between inventor team size and high-quality innovation, and a negative relationship between inventor team size and low-quality innovation. These relationships are moderated at different degree by technological and geographic diversity. Our findings contribute to existing literature of innovation and also provide meaningful implications for innovation management.

Abstract :
Drawing from signaling theory in information economics, this study investigates the mechanism of the government research and development (R&D) subsidies grants by emphasizing the role of the top management team (TMT) characteristics in the context of China. Specifically, we argue that TMT characteristics can serve as valid signals by conveying legitimacy to reduce information asymmetry between firms and governments, which subsequently affect governments' decisions to grant R&D subsidies. We test the hypotheses using data from Chinese listed firms between 2008 and 2019. The findings indicate that age, tenure, diversity in functional backgrounds, or team size of enterprises' top managers are positively associated with the amount of government R&D subsidies granted. This positive effect is more pronounced in regions with a lower marketization level. This study contributes to the existing literature on R&D subsidies, and offers insights to both policymakers and firm managers.

Abstract :
Previous studies have investigated the factors that influence firms' decision engaging in government innovation programme, but some important horizontal factors have been largely ignored, such as the effect from industry peers. Based on signal theory and expectancy theory, this paper studies the role of industry peers who have obtained government R&D subsidies in raising awareness and motivation of other non-funded firms to engage in the same project. Using Chinese listed firms between 2008 and 2016 as the empirical sample, this paper introduces the awareness-motivation-capability (AMC) framework and uses the Logit regression to examine the associations between peer effects and strategy choice. The empirical results indicate that the number of funded firms in an industry and their superior performance have positive impact on non-funded firms to obtain government R&D subsidies, and these relationships are further strengthened by non-funded firms' innovation ability and profitability. This study makes contributions to literature on government R&D subsidies and peer effect by providing a view of imitation behaviour in innovation activities.
