Abstract :

3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (KH580) surface organic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was synthesized to simultaneously bolster the anti-ageing property of SBS copolymer modified bitumen (SMB). The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy proved that the KH580 was successfully grafted on the surface of LDHs (KH-LDHs). After KH580 surface organic modification, the aggregation and hydrophilicity of LDHs were significantly restrained, and the UV absorbing capacity was concurrently enhanced. Compared with LDHs, KHLDHs exhibited superior compatibility within SMB and could improve the high-temperature performance and elastic behavior of SMB much better. After ageing, SMB became stiff and crisp, the rheological properties worsened, and the number of oxygen-containing groups (C--O and S--O) in SMB experienced a considerable rise. Simultaneously, SBS copolymer also degraded during the ageing process, further deteriorating the performance of SMB. LDHs was able to inhibit the ageing repercussions on the rheological properties, chemical structure and SBS copolymer, thus bolstering both the anti-ageing property of SMB and the degradation resistance of SBS copolymer. Furthermore, the role of LDHs would be dramatically strengthened by KH580 surface organic modification.

Abstract :

gamma- aminopropyltriethoxy silane organic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and SBS were combined into LDHs/SBS composite to improve anti-ageing performance of SBS modified bitumen (SMB). XPS and SEM showed that organic LDHs (OLDHs) was successfully grafted onto SBS, and OLDHs could be more evenly distributed in SBS, which was conducive to improve the anti-degradation capability of SBS. Compared with SBS and LDHs/SBS composite, the interaction between OLDHs/SBS composite and bitumen was stronger, resulting in the better stabilization of SBS and LDHs in bitumen. Furthermore, OLDHs/SBS composite could enhance the hightemperature property of SMB. SMB became hard and brittle during ageing, the physical and rheological properties were remarkably deteriorated. LDHs/SBS and OLDHs/SBS composite could alleviate the damage of ageing on the highand low-temperature performance of SMB and enhance the anti-ageing capacity, particularly OLDHs/SBS composite. Then, the improvement mechanism of OLDHs/SBS and LDHs/SBS composite on the anti- ageing capability of SMB was analyzed at microscopic scale. LDHs/SBS and OLDHs/SBS composite could hinder the infiltration of oxygen into bitumen and decrease the oxygen content, and simultaneously decelerate the oxygen diffusion rate in bitumen. The synergistic combination of these two functions conspicuously diminished the probability of oxygen colliding with bitumen or SBS, which relieved the ageing of bitumen and the degradation of SBS, and ultimately improved the anti-ageing capability of SMB. Furthermore, due to the better stability, the effectiveness of OLDHs/SBS composite was more notable than LDHs/SBS composite, OLDHs/SBS composite demonstrated superior improvement on the anti-ageing capability of SMB than LDHs/SBS composite.

Abstract :

2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone-5-sulfonic acid (ultraviolet absorbent, BP) intercalated layered double hydroxide (LDH) was synthesized to enhance the anti-ageing properties of styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) modified bitumen (SMB). X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectroscopy indicated that BP has been successfully substituted into LDH interlamination, and BP intercalated LDH (BP-LDH) exhibited better UV absorptive capacity than LDH. Then, the physical and rheological properties, chemical structure of BP-LDH and LDH modified SMB before and after ageing were comprehensively studied. Compared with LDH, BP-LDH possessed the smaller difference in solubility parameters (delta) and the stronger interaction energy (Einter) with SMB, resulting in the better compatibility of BP-LDH modified SMB. The high-temperature stability of SMB was promoted with the addition of BP-LDH or LDH, especially BP-LDH. After ageing, the temperature susceptibility, low-temperature anti-cracking and anti-fatigue cracking of SMB were deteriorated, the oxygen-containing groups (C = O and S = O) in SMB noticeably increased and carbon-carbon double bond (C = C) concurrently decreased. LDH could mitigate the ruin of ageing on the performance and chemical structures of SMB, and strengthen the anti-ageing performance. Furthermore, BP intercalated modification could further significantly heighten the performance of LDH.

Abstract :

为了增强SBS改性沥青(SMB)的抗老化性能,利用层状双金属氢氧化物(LDHs)的独特结构对SMB进行改性.研究了LDHs对SMB的物理性能、高低温流变性能和化学结构的影响规律.研究结果表明:LDHs的加入有助于提高SMB的弹性性能,提升SMB的高温稳定性能;老化后,沥青分子发生氧化反应导致SMB中含氧官能团(S=O和C=O)含量增加,同时SBS分子链发生断裂引起SMB中碳碳双键官能团(C=C)含量减少,这些变化使SMB的物理性能、高温抗车辙性能和低温抗疲劳开裂性能发生劣化,导致其变硬变脆;LDHs的加入可以阻止沥青分子的氧化反应和SBS分子链断裂,减缓沥青分子的老化和SBS老化降解,减轻老化对SMB物理性能和高低温流变性能的破坏,增强SMB的抗老化能力,为建设长寿命的SMB路面提供技术支持.

Abstract :

Asphalt aging causes significant distress to pavements, which risks driving safety and poses unsustainable repair and reconstruction works. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is a promising anti-aging modifier for asphalt. A unique benefit of LDH is its potential raw material - bischofite, a fruitful by-product of salt lake industries and is often casually discarded. In this work, LDH with laminated structure and high crystallinity was synthesized from industrial waste bischofite, and the silane coupling agent A151 was grafted onto the LDH surface, which remarkably inhibits the adhesion and hydrophilicity of LDH and makes it more compatible with asphalt. Asphalt becomes hard and brittle after aging, and the rheological properties deteriorate considerably. At the micro-level, asphalt aging is manifested by the oxidation of light components to heavy ones, the increase of molecular weight, the accumulation of macromolecules, and the gelation of the colloidal structure. Comparative studies indicate that the LDH synthesized from waste bischofite is able to relieve performance deterioration, component oxidation, molecular polymerization, and structure gelation of asphalt during aging. Furthermore, the A151 surface organic modification can further improve the effect of LDH in bolstering the anti-aging property of asphalt. These favorable results provide a sustainable approach to building durable pavements.

Abstract :

A systematic study on the tetramethylsilane-hydorgen (TMS-H-2) system by high-throughput thermodynamic method is conducted with a large experimental condition range (500 2700 K, 0 75 kPa, and H-2:TMS ratio of 0.1 to 10000) towards the deposition of pure single-crystal SiC by high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (HTCVD) method. The temperature, pressure and H-2:TMS ratio dependence phase diagrams are calculated to describe the deposition condition of single-phase "gas + SiC" region. Due to the etching effect of hydrogen on graphite, the increasing temperature and pressure could suppress the formation of graphite and favor the growth of SiC in the H-2:TMS ratio above 1000, however, excessive H-2:TMS ratio could reduce the TMS consumption efficiency. TMS consumption efficiency maps focusing on the gas + SiC region based on the phase diagrams have been carried out to balance the deposition parameters, SiC mole fraction and TMS consumption efficiency. When H-2:TMS ratio > 1000, an accepted window for preparing single-phase SiC with a high TMS consumption efficiency (>90%) is provided, and this window could expand furtherly with increasing the ratio. TMS consumption efficiency maps offer the theoretic basis and guidance for improving the quality and cost of industrial production of single-crystal SiC by HTCVD method.

Abstract :

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were prepared to enhance the ageing resistance of SBS modified bitumen (SMB). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that SDS has been intercalated into the interlayers of LDHs. Compared to LDHs, the interaction between SDS intercalated LDHs (OLDHs) and SMB was obviously stronger, and OLDHs exhibited better dispersity and stability in SMB. After ageing, the viscoelastic properties of SMB were deteriorated. LDHs and OLDHs could obviously alleviate the deterioration of ageing on the properties of SMB, which could improve the ageing resistance of SMB, especially OLDHs. Additionally, the enhancement mechanisms of OLDHs and LDHs for the ageing resistance of SMB at the microscopic scale were investigated by molecular dynamics. The incor-poration of LDHs could obstruct the invasion of oxygen into the interior of SMB and inhibit the diffusion rate of oxygen in SMB, which reduced the oxidation reaction probability of SMB during ageing, and eventually achieved the improvement on ageing resistance of SMB. The effectiveness of LDHs was further improved after SDS intercalated modification, that was, SDS intercalated modification was beneficial to enhance the ageing resis-tance of LDHs for SMB.

Abstract :

For the utilization of waste bischofite from salt lakes, the waste bischofite was utilized to synthesize layered double hydroxide (LDH) by hydrothermal method, and the synthesized LDH was further organically intercalated with 3,5-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid (antioxidant, DPA) by anion exchange methods. Then, the synthesized LDH and DPA intercalated LDH (DPA-LDH) were applied to improve the ageing resistance of asphalt. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy manifested that LDH and DPA-LDH had been successfully synthesized. After DPA intercalation, the adhesive aggregation among LDH particles was obviously ameliorated, and the contact angle of LDH increased from 31.3 degrees to 77.9 degrees, the hydrophilicity of LDH was significantly decreased. The effect of LDH and DPA-LDH (3 % by weight of asphalt) on rheological properties, chemical constituents and molecular weight of asphalt before and after ageing were comprehensively studied. The high-temperature performance grade of asphalt increased from PG64 to PG70 with the addition of LDH and DPA-LDH, which indicated that LDH and DPA-LDH could enhance the high-temperature performance of asphalt. After ageing, the high and low- temperature performance of asphalt worsened, the colloidal stability index (C-I) decreased from 3.548 to 1.844, the gel index (G(I)) was 48 %, the colloidal structure tended to gel structure, the molecular weight (M-w) enlarged from 3387 to 4101 (the M-w growth rate of 21 %). LDH could restrain the destruction of ageing on rheological properties, the colloidal structure gel of asphalt (the G(I) of 37.4 %) and molecular weight (the M-w growth rate of 13 %) of asphalt, and strengthen the ageing resistance of asphalt. Furthermore, the enhancement of DPA-LDH (the G(I) of 16.7 % and the M-w growth rate of 6 %) on the ageing resistance of asphalt was more superior than LDH. The result showed that the synthesized DPA-LDH exhibited outstanding performance in improving the ageing resistance of asphalt, which was beneficial to the long-life pavement and the utilization of abandoned bischofite from salt lakes.

Preparation of dodecyltrimethoxysilane surface organic LDHs and application in aging resistance of SBS modified bitumen SCIE

Abstract :

Dodecyltrimethoxysilane surface organic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was synthesized and used to improve the aging resistance of SBS modified bitumen (SMB), According to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction and Contact angle meter, dodecyltrimethoxysilane has been chemically grafted onto the surface of LDHs and will not affect the crystal structure of LDHs. After dodecyltrimethoxysilane surface organic modification, the -OH on the surface of LDHs was decreased, meanwhile, some organic groups were introduced into LDHs, which contributed to reducing the surface hydrophilicity of LDHs. Then, the physical, rheological properties and chemical structure of SMB containing OLDHs and LDHs before and after aging were studied thoroughly. Compared with LDHs, the compatibility of OLDHs in SMB has been significantly enhanced. Furthermore, OLDHs modified SMB exhibited more excellent high-temperature behavior. After aging, bitumen was oxidized and SBS was degraded, the physical and rheological properties of SMB were seriously deteriorated. The addition of LDHs can suppress the destruction of aging on the performance and chemical structure of SBM, and enhance the aging resistance of SBM. The enhancement of LDHs has been notably strengthened after dodecyltrimethoxysilane surface organic modification.

Abstract :

SBS-modified bitumen (SMB) is susceptible to aging, which seriously influences its service performance and life. In order to strengthen the anti-aging ability of SMB, triethoxyvinylsilane was designed to organically modify layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and was applied to modify SMB. The dispersibility and storage stability of LDHs in SMB were markedly enhanced after triethoxyvinylsilane organic modification, and the compatibility and storage stability of SBS in bitumen were simultaneously enhanced. Compared with SMB, the introduction of LDHs and organic LDHs (OLDHs) could ameliorate the high-temperature properties of SMB, and the thermostability of SBS in bitumen at a high temperature was also distinctly improved, especially OLDHs. After aging, due to the oxidation of molecular bitumen and the degradation of molecular SBS, SMB became hardened and brittle, and the rheological properties were significantly deteriorated, which had serious impacts on the performance of SMB. LDHs can mitigate the detriment of aging to bitumen and SBS, and the deterioration of the rheological properties of SMB is obviously alleviated. As a result of the better dispersibility and storage stability, OLDHs exerted superior reinforcement of the anti-aging ability of SMB.
