Response of Daytime Changes in Temperature and Humidity to Three-Dimensional Urban Morphology in Subtropical Residential Districts SCIE

Abstract :

The combination of global climate change and the urban heat island effect has given rise to a deterioration in the livability of residential districts within cities, posing challenges to enhancing the health quality of urban environments. Meanwhile, the intensification of daytime changes in temperature and humidity in residential districts has rendered the sensory representation of the urban heat island effect more pronounced. This study selects the residential districts in Fuzhou City as the research case area, which have witnessed a discernible warming trend in recent years, and acquires temperature and humidity parameter data at three time periods (early morning, noon, and evening) to represent the daytime temperature and humidity change phase. Through aerial photography and field research, three types of spatial morphological indicators (buildings I, vegetation II, and the combination of buildings and vegetation II) of residential districts are quantified to represent the three-dimensional spatial form of the case study area. The analysis results show the following: (1) Residential districts experience two phases of daytime changes in temperature and humidity: a warming and drying phase (WDP) in the morning and a cooling and humidifying phase (CHP) in the afternoon. The characteristics of changes in temperature and humidity show a spatial correlation with each other. (2) The impact of urban three-dimensional morphology on changes in temperature and humidity in WDP is minor, whereas, in CHP, it is influenced by Class II and Class III indicators. The two types of urban morphology exert a synergistic regulatory effect on changes in temperature and humidity. (3) Vegetation has a significant regulatory effect on temperature and humidity variations in residential areas through changes in its three-dimensional form. Enlarging the area of individual trees while reducing their canopy volume can restrain the warming and dehumidification of residential districts and promote cooling and humidification. In contrast to only planting trees, a vegetation configuration combining trees, shrubs, and grass can bring a more obvious cooling effect to residential districts. The research results can provide a reference for urban planners in the planning and design of residential areas as well as the optimization and improvement of urban living environments.

Abstract :

The value realization of ecological products is currently a rapidly evolving research topic; however, the definition of its concept, type, and operation mechanism remains relatively ambiguous. Operating in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, this review employs keyword retrieval and screening, utilizing VOSviewer and word cloud mapping for analysis, in order to reveal three primary research domains related to ecological product value realization. Based on thorough screening and the analysis of high-quality literature, this study comprehensively accomplished the following objectives: (1) clarifying the fundamental concepts of ecosystem services and ecological products, their interrelationships, and the scope of research on ecological products; (2) clarifying the basic connotation of realizing the value of ecological products; (3) demonstrating government-led approaches, market-driven approaches and collaborative pathways for realizing the value of ecological products; (4) reviewing international cases related to realizing the value of public ecological products, quasi-public ecological products, and operational ecological products. The academic contributions of this study are (1) expanding the theoretical framework for realizing the value of ecological products; (2) providing a Chinese perspective on global research on pathways to realize value from ecological products; and (3) offering a novel approach to revitalizing regional economies and improving local ecological environments. Based on this research, several shortcomings and future directions in this field are identified: (1) insufficient clarity, standardization, and uniformity in evaluation and measurement methods; (2) the absence of comparison between ecological products and urban economic products; (3) inadequate exploration of multi-stakeholder allocation and coordination mechanisms; (4) limited research on the role of capital markets in allocating ecological product resources.

Ambient Ozone, PM1 and Female Lung Cancer Incidence in 436 Chinese Counties SCIE SSCI

Abstract :

Ozone air pollution has been increasingly severe and has become another major air pollutant in Chinese cities, while PM1 is more harmful to human health than coarser PMs. However, nationwide studies estimating the effects of ozone and PM1 are quite limited in China. This study aims to assess the spatial associations between ozone (and PM1) and the incidence rate of female lung cancer in 436 Chinese cancer registries (counties/districts). The effects of ozone and PM1 were estimated, respectively, using statistical models controlling for time, location and socioeconomic covariates. Then, three sensitivity analyses including the adjustments of smoking covariates and co-pollutant (SO2) and the estimates of ozone, PM1 and SO2 effects in the same model, were conducted to test the robustness of the effects of the two air pollutants. Further still, we investigated the modifying role of urban-rural division on the effects of ozone and PM1. According to the results, a 10 mu g/m(3) increase in ozone and PM1 was associated with a 4.57% (95% CI: 4.32%, 16.16%) and 4.89% (95% CI: 4.37%, 17.56%) increase in the incidence rate of female lung cancer relative to its mean, respectively. Such ozone and PM1 effects were still significant in three sensitivity analyses. Regarding the modifying role of urban-rural division, the effect of PM1 was greater by 2.98% (95% CI: 1.01%, 4.96%) in urban than in rural areas when PM1 changed by 10 mu g/m(3). However, there was no modification effect of urban-rural division for ozone. In conclusion, there were positive associations between ozone (and PM1) and the incidence rate of female lung cancer in China. Urban-rural division may modify the effect of PM1 on the incidence rate of female lung cancer, which is seldom reported. Continuous and further prevention and control measures should be developed to alleviate the situation of the two air pollutants.
