Abstract :
Previous bismuth-based photocatalysts usually employ a strong acid solution (e.g., HNO3 solution) to obtain an ultrathin structure toward high photocatalytic activity. In this work, the ultrathin layered BiOIO3 nanosheets are successfully synthesized using just the glucose hydrothermal solution. The high-concentration glucose solution shows the obvious acidity after the hydrothermal process, which leads to the quick decrease in thickness of BiOIO3 nanosheets from similar to 45.58 to similar to 5.74 nm. The ultrathin structure can greatly improve charge carriers' separation and transfer efficiency. The generation of reductive iodide ions brings about oxygen vacancies in the ultrathin nanosheets, then the defect energy level is formed, causing the decreased band gap and improving the visible light absorption. Compared to thick BiOIO3 nanosheet with little oxygen vacancies, much higher carrier separation efficiency and visible light absorption are achieved in the ultrathin nanosheets with oxygen vacancies, resulting in an excellent photocatalytic performance (0.1980 min(-1) for RhB degradation), which is much higher than most other bismuth-based photocatalysts. The superoxide radicals (O-center dot(2)-) and holes (h(+)) are the major active species responsible for high photocatalytic activity. This work affords an environmentally friendly strategy to synthesize ultrathin photocatalysts with superior photocatalytic properties.

Abstract :
In this work, the frequency dependence of ferroelectric and electrocaloric properties in barium titanate-based ceramics was studied based on Maxwell relations. It is found that the maximum and remnant polarization will decrease while the coercive field increases a lot with rising frequency from 0.1 to 10Hz, indicating that polarization rotation and domain switching become difficult at high frequencies. The electrocaloric properties show the different frequency dependence at different phase structures. Isothermal entropy change (Delta S) and adiabatic temperature change (Delta T) are similar around/above Curie temperature (TC), showing tiny frequency dependence. However, Delta S and Delta T display the obvious frequency dependence below TC, especially in the orthorhombic-tetragonal phase-transition region with a stable ferroelectric phase, and this frequency dependence becomes more obvious under a low-electric field. It is also found that increasing the frequency can weaken the electric field dependence of electrocaloric strength. This work gives a general profile of frequency dependence for electrocaloric properties in ferroelectric ceramics.

Abstract :
Electrocaloric cooling based on ferroelectrics is an eco-friendly technology. BaTiO3 (BT)-based ferroelectric ceramics possess a high electrocaloric effect, which is significantly affected by grain size. Herein, fine and large grains' contributions to electrocaloric and related properties in BT-based ceramics are revealed via tuning sintered dwelling time (ts) in discontinuous grain growth (DGG) process with fine and large grains coexistence. With increasing ts, grain size change can be divided into two stages. The main change is the large-grain size (>100–200 μm) and number in the beginning DGG stage, and the properties' evolutions are mainly contributed by large grain change. The bigger grain size of large and fine grains contributes to the higher electrocaloric property, sharper phase transition, ferroelectric polarization (change rate), and coercive field. In the subsequent stage, fine grains gradually grow up (∼4.0–5.0 μm) while large-grain size decreases slightly. Here the properties' evolutions are influenced by the competitive contributions between fine and large grains. Large grain contribution is mainly attributed to the domain size effect, and fine grain contribution should embrace the domain size effect and grain-boundary pinning effect. This work contributes to a broad understanding of fine/large grain contributions in the promising BT-based electrocaloric ceramics. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract :
Influences of calcination temperature (T-cal) on discontinuous grain growth (DGG), and related grain size effect on structure/ferroelectric/electrocaloric properties were studied and compared in fine-/large-grain Ba(Ti0.85Zr0.15)O-3 ceramics. DGG phenomena from several to >100 mu m are all observed with rising sintering temperature (T-S). Increasing T-cal (1200-1320 degrees C) can cause larger powders but decrease the sintering activity, leading to a higher critical T-S (1320-1360 degrees C) of DGG. Relatively high T-cal (larger powder size) will lead to smaller ceramic grains and density before DGG, while being prone to obtain larger grains and stronger ferroelectric correlations, but lower density after DGG. The over-sized powders and smaller grains/density will present in ceramics if T-cal closes to critical T-S. In fine- and large-grain ceramics, grain size variation is similar to the evolution of dielectric, ferroelectric polarization, and electrocaloric properties, but shows an opposite variation trend with coercive field and relaxor phase transition. Electrocaloric strength of fine-grain ceramics increases with a rising electric field due to their difficult domain switching, while an opposite trend shows in large-grain ceramics. Finally, higher electrocaloric properties are obtained in ceramics with relatively big grains because of easier polarization rotation, higher polarization, and polarization change rate.

Abstract :
Achieving high-quality white light and related effective modulation is crucial for the development of solid-state luminescent materials. However, white emission is frequently manipulated through irreversible chemical routes, departing from the actual applications in solid-state lighting devices that require in-situ modulation. In this study, we designed and prepared La3+/Dy3+/Eu3+ tri-doped (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 transparent-ferroelectric ceramics, which exhibit abundant optical properties and moderate ferroelectricity. For the characteristics of white light, the emission colors could be regulated by adjusting the excitation wavelength. Meanwhile, on the basis of the decrease in photoluminescence intensity due to photochromic (PC) behavior, modulations of white emission and color coordinates were realized. The regulation of optical properties through the physical route (i.e., maneuverable light illumination) is closer to practical application. In addition, the excellent fluorescence temperature sensing properties (a maximum relative sensitivity of 7.81 % K−1 obtained at 233 K) and high PC contrast (75.8 %) of the ceramics provide guidance for the design of other multifunctional optoelectronic materials and devices. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Abstract :
Piezo-catalysis is a green and effective method for degrading rich and obstinate molecules in wastewater. Yet, the piezo-catalytic performance of frequently-used barium titanate (BTO) is still limited for practical applications, thus it is crucial to construct high-efficiency BTO-based catalysts. Herein, BiOBr/BTO heterojunction-based piezo-photocatalysts were successfully prepared using the chemical precipitation method, and an internal electric field was established via ultrasound to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs through the synergistic effect of piezocatalysis and photocatalysis. Transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the heterojunction. The degradation performance of Rhodamine B (RhB) by BiOBr/BTO is the best among various pollutants, giving a reaction rate constant up to 20.839 x 10 -2 min -1 , exceeding numerous previously reported catalysts. In addition, the piezo-photocatalytic reaction rate of BiOBr/BTO for Methyl Orange was 9.298 x 10 -2 min -1 , approximate to 3.3 times than those of pure BTO (2.806 x 10 -2 min -1 ), and also approximate to 15.9 times and 3.3 times than those of single photocatalysis (0.585 x 10 -2 min -1 ) or piezocatalysis (2.848 x 10 -2 min - 1 ). Importantly, the BiOBr/BTO heterojunction demonstrates excellent catalytic degradation performance for a broad range of pollutants (e.g., dyes and antibiotics) and their mixtures, as well as favorable cycling stability and repeatability with changed environmental conditions, displaying applicability in actual wastewater treatment. The possible degradation pathways of RhB were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The present work supplies a feasible strategy for the preparation of high-efficiency piezo-photocatalytic BTO-based heterojunctions, which can guide other composites for environmental remediation.

Abstract :
Transparent dielectric ceramics are splendid candidates for transparent pulse capacitors (TPCs) due to splendid cycle stability and large power density. However, the performance and service life of TPCs at present are threatened by overheating damage caused by dielectric loss. Here, a cooperative optimization strategy of microstructure control and superparaelectric regional regulation is proposed to simultaneously achieve excellent energy storage performance and real-time temperature monitoring function in NaNbO3-based ceramics. By introducing aliovalent ions and oxides with large bandgap energy, the size of polar nanoregions is continuously reduced. Due to the combined effect of increased relaxor behavior and fine grains, excellent comprehensive performances are obtained through doping appropriate amounts of Bi, Yb, Tm, and Zr, Ta, Hf in A- and B-sites of the NaNbO3 matrix, including recoverable energy storage density (5.39 J cm(-3)), extremely high energy storage efficiency (91.97%), ultra-fast discharge time (29 ns), and superior optical transmittance (approximate to 47.5% at 736 nm). Additionally, the phenomenon of abnormal fluorescent negative thermal expansion is realized due to activation mechanism of surface phonon at high temperatures that can promote the formation of [YbO]-Tm3+ pairs, showing great potential in real-time temperature monitoring of TPCs. This research provides ideas for developing electronic devices with multiple functionalities.

Abstract :
High entropy perovskite oxides (HEPOs) have received increasing attention due to their appealing photocatalytic activity. Considering their excellent ferroelectric properties used as energy storage capacitors, it is promising for HEPOs to exhibit remarkable pizeo-photocatalytic properties. Herein, (Bi0.2Na0.2Ba0.2K0.2La0.2)TiO3 (BNBKL) HEPO powders were prepared by the traditional solid-state reaction method to demonstrate the advantages of HEPO in the piezo-photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants. The results evidence that the BNBKL HEPO has excellent catalytic activity compared to traditional piezo-photocatalysis, which is fundamentally based on the high-entropy-induced band structure reconstruction and severer lattice distortions, shedding light on a viable and universal strategy for substantially enhancing the catalytic efficiency of piezo-photocatalyst.

Abstract :
Rare-earth-doped transparent ferroelectrics exhibit outstanding optical transparency, photoluminescence (PL), photochromic (PC) and various electrical properties, showing potential for use in optoelectronic applications. However, there is an inevitable trade-off relationship between optical and electrical coupling during the integration of multifunctionality. In this work, Ba2+, Ho3+ and Yb3+ were codoped in KNN translucent-ferroelectric ceramics (as a model material) to overcome the contradiction between optical (transparency/PC) and electrical properties (resistivity/ferroelectricity). The defects (mainly oxygen vacancies) within the ceramics can be effectively regulated through annealing under different atmospheres. At the cost of a slight decrease in PC performance, the electrical properties significantly improved; i.e., for the optimal ceramic annealed in an oxygen atmosphere, both the maximum and remnant polarizations nearly doubled, and the resistivity significantly decreased compared to that of the original sample. A mechanism for regulating these properties was proposed. This research serves as a valuable example for adjusting the optical and electrical properties of other ferroelectrics through annealing. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
