Stability analysis of long-span CFST truss arch bridges with L-shaped bracings EI CSCD PKU

Abstract :

In order to study the effectiveness of L-shaped bracings in stability of long-span CFST truss arch bridges, the mechanical behavior and the stability of long-span CFST truss arch bridges are analyzed and compared through theoretical analysis and numerical calculation based on Hejiang River Third Bridge.In addition, the significance of L-shaped bracings in the stability of truss arch bridge is checked by orthogonal test and multi-factor variance analysis methods.The results show that (1) for the topology optimization types of L-shaped bracings, the main arch has the best stability when the K-shaped diagonal bracing is set at the top chord of main arch rib and close to arch foot; (2) compared with the K-shaped, X-shaped or double-cross-shaped bracings, the L-shaped bracings may have less influences on the maximum value of axial force, in-plane bending moment, out-of-plane bending moment, stress and the vertical deformation of the main arch, but they may affect the horizontal deformation of the main arch to some extent.(3) When the parameters are within the reasonable ranges, the replacement of K-shaped, X-shaped or double-cross-shaped bracings with the L-shaped bracings may not significantly reduce the stability of bifurcation buckling and the extreme-value point of the long-span CFST truss arch bridges.Hence, the L-shaped bracings can be chosen by engineers in the stability design of such arch bridges without no special emphasis. © 2020, Editorial Office of China Civil Engineering Journal. Abstract :

To ensure better horizontal deformation resistance, the pile foundation of integral abutment jointless bridges (IAJBs) should be designed as flexible pile. However, the calculation algorithm of flexible pile in relevant codes in China is mainly applied to the laterally loaded pile, and whether it can be used to identify the flexible pile for IAJBs remains a tricky issue to be studied. Therefore, in order to study the aseismic performance and interaction mechanism of the single pile-soil system, three concrete model piles with different lengths were tested under horizontal low-cycle reciprocating displacement based on a specially designed pile deformation measurement method. The result shows that the earliest cracking position of concrete pile is between 3~6 times of pile diameter. The deeper the pile is buried, the better the effect of pile-soil interaction with a deeper location of the deformation characteristic point. Meanwhile, stiffness of pile-soil system, horizontal ultimate bearing capacity and aseismic performance is improved with burial depth increased. The result also indicates that, when the pile-soil system reach the elastoplastic stage, the flexible performance of the pile will gradually degenerate from the elastic pile to the rigid pile. Furthermore, the provisions in relevant codes in China are not safe enough when evaluating the flexural performance of the pile foundation of integral abutment jointless bridges. Hence, it is recommended to use the Broms method for the benchmarking calculation in practical engineering. © 2020, Science Press. All right reserved.

Abstract :

When casting wet concrete into hollow steel tubular arch during the construction process of a concrete-filled steel tubular arch bridge, an initial stress (due to dead load, etc.) would be produced in the steel tube. In order to understand the influence of this initial stress on the strength of the concrete-filled steel tubular arch bridge, a total of four single tubular arch rib (bare steel first) specimens (concrete-filled steel tubular last) with various initial stress levels were constructed and tested to failure. The test results indicate that the initial stress has a large influence on the ultimate load-carrying capacity and ductility of the arch structure. The high preloading ratio will reduce significantly the strength and ductility that the maximum reductions are over 25%. Then, a finite element method was presented and validated using the test results. Based on this finite element model, a parametric study was performed that considered the influence of various parameters on the ultimate load-carrying capacity of concrete-filled steel tubular arches. These parameters included arch slenderness, rise-to-span ratio, loading method, and initial stress level. The analysis results indicate that the initial stress can reduce the ultimate loading capacity significantly, and this reduction has a strong relationship with arch slenderness and rise-to-span ratio. Finally, a method for calculating the preloading reduction factor of ultimate load-carrying capacity of single concrete-filled steel tubular arch rib structures was proposed based on the equivalent beam-column method.

Abstract :

The buffeting response of a structure is very complex, and in main wind resistant design codes/specifications of structures, the equivalent static wind loads (ESWL) is adopted to instead the real dynamic buffeting analysis. The multi-target ESWL calculation method of long-span bridges is studied from a new perspective. Firstly, load response correlation (LRC) method was used to estimate ESWL vectors at the nodes of girders of the long-span bridge and then to form the ESWL matrix FLRC. Secondly, the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique was applied to attaining the proper orthogonal matrix φLRC of FLRC. Thirdly, with the buffeting response extreme values of the girder regarded as the equivalent targets, the first i-order proper modes of φLRC were used as the base vectors to reconstruct ESWL, so that the multi-target ESWL can be obtained in least square meaning. Finally, East Sea cable-stayed bridge was used as an example to validate the effectiveness of the method. The results indicate that the accuracy of buffeting responses calculated by multi-target ESWL and the rationality of ESWL distribution are acceptable by using the proposed method, because after POD, the matrix φLRC contains both the fluctuating wind pressure information and the buffeting response information, which are ordered according to the significance. © 2019, Editorial Office of China Civil Engineering Journal. The integral abutment jointless bridge (IAJB) has many desirable characteristics such as long service life, convenient construction, and low building and maintenance costs. It has thus been widely used and applied both in China and worldwide. However, the method to calculate the earth pressure of the backfill behind an integral abutment requires further investigation. Therefore, considering an integral abutment bridge in China, a reciprocating low-cycle pseudo-static test was carried out to determine the integral abutment-H-shaped steel pile-soil interaction. The mechanical behavior and decaying law of the earth pressure behind the abutment were evaluated, and methods to calculate the abutment internal force and earth pressure coefficient were proposed. The results show that a nonlinear relationship exists between the earth pressure behind the abutment and the loading displacement for the longitudinal forward-abutment direction; furthermore, the earth pressure increases with the increase in the loading displacement of the forward-abutment. The earth pressure behind the abutment exhibits primarily triangular and trapezoidal distributions along the depth direction. Meanwhile, the position of the resultant force for the abutment is located at a depth of two-thirds the height of abutment. It was also noted that the earth pressure is exponentially attenuated along the longitudinal bridge and decreases to nearly zero at an abutment height of two times that behind the abutment. This means that the longitudinal movement of the abutment of the IAJB, under the effect of temperature, affects only the backfill of the abutment within the range of two times the abutment height. The calculation shows that the methods recommended by the specification are not appropriate for the calculation of the earth pressure of the IAJB. The results obtained using the proposed method to calculate the earth pressure behind the abutment demonstrate good agreement with the test and the bridge monitoring results, and the proposed method can thus be used as a reference for the design of IAJB and the formulation of the specification. © 2019, Editorial Department of China Journal of Highway and Transport. Abstract :

In order to obtain reasonable aerodynamic shape of shaped bridge decks, the buffeting performances comparison of a cable-stayed bridge was conducted based on wind tunnel tests. Firstly, three different types of shaped bridge decks were designed based on one real cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 300 m. Secondly, force balance and vibration sectional model wind tunnel tests were carried out to obtain aerodynamic parameters under different wind attack angles. The aerodynamic parameters include three-component static wind loading coefficients, flutter derivatives, etc. Finally, three types of shaped bridge decks' buffeting performances were compared and analyzed by considering the aeroelastic and buffeting forces. The results show that buffeting responses of the bridge with different shaped decks are different from each other. Buffeting responses in any one freedom could be changed when changing bridge deck shape. However, the optimal influences in vertical, lateral and torsional directions could not be achieved at the same condition. Reasonable aerodynamic shape selection of shaped bridge decks should consider the mechanical characteristics and the performances of flutter, vortex and buffeting. © 2017, Editorial Board of Journal of Harbin Institute of Technology. Abstract :

A three dimensional finite element modal was established to analysis the welding residual stress of hybrid steel U-rib stiffened plate under different conditions. In this paper, a welding residual stress simulation method which was verified by large number of experiments, was used to identify the influence of thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, density, modulus of elasticity, Poisson ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion to the distribution of the plate residual stress, respectively. The analysis results show that the coefficient of thermal expansion and Poission ratio have very little influence to the residual stress; the modulus of elasticity and thermal conductivity have most important influence; and the specific heat capacity and density have the moderate influence. As a result, the elastic modulus and thermal conductivity should be paid more attention in the welding residual stress numerical simulation on the hybrid steel U-rib stiffened plate in order to get the correct values. © 2016, Harbin Research Institute of Welding. Abstract :

Because of the asymmetric stiffness of asymmetric cable-stayed bridge with single tower, the wind induced dynamic responses are different from which of the traditional symmetric cable-stayed bridge. Based on one asymmetric cable-stayed bridge with single tower which is located in coastal area, buffeting equivalent static wind loading (ESWL) of long span cable-stayed bridges was investigated in depth. Firstly, the dynamic characteristics of the bridge were analyzed through finite element method. Secondly, sectional model wind tunnel tests of the bridge deck were conducted and buffeting responses of the bridge were analyzed through the buffeting calculation model with the consideration of buffeting forces and self-excited forces. On the basis of the above work, a buffeting ESWL calculation method based on the mode shapes was derived by taking the buffeting response of the structure as equivalent object. Finally, the results of proposed method were compared with those of accurate buffeting response calculation method. The results show that buffeting responses of different parts of the bridge can be simultaneously considered by the proposed method. Compared with the method in wind-resistent design specification for highway bridges of china, the proposed method can represent the relationships between distribution of ESWL and mode shapes and mass distribution. Comparing the results of the proposed method and the extreme values of accurate buffeting response calculation method, the errors at critical nodes of the bridge deck are smaller than 10%, which meet the required accuracy of the practical engineering. Full-scale measurement and investigation of wind pressure loadings on typical rooftop photovoltaic solar panels EI CSCD PKU

Abstract :

A full-scale measurement of wind pressure loadings was conducted on photovoltaic (PV) solar panels mounted on the flat roof of a multipurpose low-rise building. According to the characteristics of wind pressure time series, several probability density functions were properly selected for nonlinear regression analysis of wind pressure coefficients of each gauging point. Numerical fittings of mean and peak (positive maxima and negative minima) and area-averaged peak pressure coefficients were performed and compared by using six probability distributions. The analysis results show that the probability distributions of negative minima and positive maxima of pressure coefficients are left-skewed and right-skewed, respectively. The mean pressure coefficient time series comply with unbiased distribution and the t distribution fits the measured data best, followed by Logistic, Normal, Type I EDV distribution, respectively; Type I EVD has the best fitting effect for peak values, and then the Lognormal distribution, Gamma distribution and Normal distribution in order; The most unfavorable pressure coefficient is dominated by negative peak pressure, that is, suction forces are predominant over wind forces on PV panels; The tributary area-averaged unfavorable pressure coefficient is recommended to take -2.3. © 2016, Science Press. Abstract :

Equivalent Static Wind loading (ESWL), which connects structure engineers and wind engineers, plays an important role in practical civil engineering projects. The multi-target ESWL of long-span bridges based on the buffeting displacement responses is studied. Firstly, the accurate and efficient Pseudo-excitation method is introduced into the ESWL calculation of structures. Secondly, the multi-target ESWL of long-span bridges based on the buffeting displacement responses is expressed in the form of pseudo-excitations according to the load-response relationship which makes the multi-target ESWLs having clear physical meaning. Finally, the East sea cable-stayed bridge is used to verify the validity of the proposed method.
