Shaking table test on Chuan-dou timber structures reinforced by assembled hoop of adjustable stiffness SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 76 | STRUCTURES
Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(2)

Abstract :

Due to a lack of seismic design, traditional timber structures make their mortise and tenon joints susceptible to seismic action. To date, there are limited mortise and tenon joints strengthening techniques that are efficient and safe. This study proposed a novel assembled hoop of adjustable stiffness to enhance the seismic resilience of joints. To evaluate the efficacy of this reinforcing technique, two 1/2 scaled Chuan-dou timber structural models were designed, namely intact and reinforced models. The comparative analysis of these models was conducted by shaking table tests. Under a seismic intensity of 8.0, the dynamic amplification factor of the reinforced model decreased by 2.9 % compared to the intact model, and the maximum displacement response decreased by 27 %. This indicates that the seismic performance of the reinforced structure was restored to the same level as the intact structure. Additionally, the interstory drift was reduced from 1/33-1/35. This indicates that the proposed reinforcement technique is feasible and effective in the seismic performance and local joints energy dissipation for the Chuan-dou timber structure.

Measurement of stress variation in unbonded and semi-bonded prestressing steel strands using the peak time shift of guided ultrasonic waves SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 | JOURNAL OF CIVIL STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING
Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(2)

Abstract :

Most methods for measuring changes in the group velocity of the first-order longitudinal mode of ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) are effective for assessing stress variations (SVs) in long, unbonded steel strands. In practical applications, the grout surrounding the steel strands complicates the extraction of the first-order longitudinal mode from the mixed propagation modes of UGWs and reduces the signal-to-noise ratio of the recorded waveforms. This situation poses challenges to the applicability of the previously mentioned methods that are based on the group velocities of the longitudinal modes. Utilizing the peak time shift (PTS) indices extracted from the phase velocity changes of the mixed multiple longitudinal propagation modes of UGWs, this manuscript presents a measurement method designed to identify SVs in both unbonded and semi-bonded steel strands. The primary challenge of this study lies in demonstrating the existence of a linear relationship between the SVs in the strands and the changes in phase velocity for any order of flexural or mixed propagation mode. Because the phase velocity cannot be measured directly in mixed propagation modes, this study first theoretically demonstrates that observing the aforementioned linear relationship is equivalent to observing the linear relationship between the SVs and the PTS index changes. Then the latter linear relationship is experimentally observed in both cases of unbonded and semi-bonded steel strands, indicating the existence of the former linear relationship. Subsequently, the optimal excitation frequencies for unbonded and semi-bonded steel strands are experimentally determined to be 180 kHz and 280 kHz, respectively. The proposed method is applicable for assessing stress levels that exceed 570 MPa in steel strands. When the SV surpasses 260 MPa, the maximum relative errors in the identified SV are approximately 20%. This error consistently decreases as the SV increases. Furthermore, a comprehensive PTS-based measurement system is thoroughly introduced. The aforementioned findings provide a foundation for subsequent investigations into measuring SVs in bonded steel strands.

Abstract :

Due to the low strength and poor durability of plain soil, and the roughly⁃ estimated proportion of modified materials determined from craftsman’ s experience, the surface of rammed earth (RE) is always susceptible to cracking and spalling. Hence, the mix proportion of modified RE (MRE) shall be designed based on the parameters of actual soil and reasonable testing method. Most existing studies are limited to obtaining a single performance index⁃based optimum mix proportion of MRE. However, the mix proportion of actual MRE shall be optimized by synchronously considering multiple mechanical and durability indexes, and meanwhile the relative importance of variables in different regions and climatic conditions shall be evaluated. Furthermore, in the existing researches, only the optimum group is determined from several predefined mix proportions, which is different from the optimum mix proportion within the preset content range of the modified material. In this work, a design method of determining the optimum mix proportion of MRE is proposed by combining the mechanical and durability performance indexes. The design method includes 1) selection principles of earth material and identification method of soil properties; 2) a multi⁃indexes⁃based comprehensive weighting method of MRE; 3) comparison and optimization of the mix proportion of modified MRE based on weighted score and regression analysis. The proposed method screens out the appropriate mix proportion of MRE by adjusting the index weight according to the varying importance of indexes. Through the optimized design, the optimum mix proportion of each modified material within the preset content range can be acquired. Based on the designed example, it is validated that the optimum mix proportion of MRE can indeed be determined by the proposed method. © 2024 Chinese Society of Civil Engineering. Damaged mortise-tenon joint strengthened using an assembled spring-steel hoop based on a design of similar rotational stiffness SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(2)

Abstract :

The excessive enhancement of rotational stiffness leads to an uneven distribution of rotational stiffness across the entire timber frame. This uneven distribution concentrates the load effect on the strengthened mortise-tenon joints (MJs), causing localized failure in advance. To address this issue, a reversible and non-destructive strengthening method for the damaged MJs is devised, involving the utilization of an assembled spring-steel hoop. The rotational stiffness of a strengthened MJ is derived from the springs that link the steel hoop of the beam and column, resembling the rotational stiffness of an intact MJ. A comparison of the measured momentrotation curves of various types of MJ reveals that the rotational stiffness similarity necessitates the strengthened MJ's yield moment and ultimate moment, along with the associated rotation angles, to closely resemble those of the intact MJ. Secondly, a design methodology is developed for the assembled spring-steel hoop, which involves determining the parameters of the connecting spring. The comparative analysis of the hysteretic test results on multiple strengthened and intact MJs indicates that the strengthened MJs exhibit rotational stiffness deviations of less than 12.2 % during the elasticity stage and 6.6 % during the plasticity stage, in comparison to the intact MJs. A spring exhibits a lower ultimate extension compared to timber, leading to a maximum discrepancy of 37.5 % in the ductility coefficients between the strengthened MJs and intact MJs. The strengthened and intact MJs display similar patterns of stiffness reduction and energy dissipation progression.

Abstract :

Measurement of crack width from the two-dimensional sonar images of the moss-covered surface of underwater concrete components based on K-means clustering SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 | STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING-AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL
Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(1)

Abstract :

Imaging sonar can precisely measure the sizes of some large defects on the surface of underwater concrete components (UCCs). However, it is challenging for image sonar to measure the widths of small cracks on UCCs. Another difficulty is the coverage of aquatic organisms, such as moss. The moss coverage divided into four stages changes the hardness and roughness of UCCs to cause wrong signal intensity of echo, crack image generation, and crack width measurement. This article first illustrates the imaging principles of surficial cracks in UCCs using a two-dimensional imaging sonar and derives a theoretical equation of crack width measurement. Then, the appropriate settings of two main factors in actual inspection, scanning distance l and pitch angle alpha, are determined by experimentally obtaining the measurement error distribution of concrete cracks with various stages of moss coverage. It also summarizes the correction equation of crack width measurement at different stages of moss coverage. For the case of unknown stages of moss coverage, the peak gray P and the mean value M of fitting the Gaussian curve of the gray-level histogram of the sonar images are experimentally proved to be effective in distinguishing the different stages of moss coverage by a K-means clustering process. Experimental results indicate that 0.75 m <= l <= 2.0 m and 15 degrees <= alpha <= 30 degrees is the appropriate ranges of l and alpha in the practical measurement. The boundary line equation to separate Stage I and Stages II & III of moss coverage is 60 <= P + M <= 80. The boundary line equation to separate Stages II & III and Stage IV is 75 <= P + M <= 110.

Scanning Scheme for Underwater High-Rise Pile Cap Foundation Based on Imaging Sonar SCIE SSCI

Abstract :

This study developed a sonar scanning scheme for underwater high-rise pile cap foundations (HRPCFs) to improve the efficiency of bridge inspection and prolong structural durability. First, two key factors in the measurement point arrangement that significantly affect the accuracy of sonar measurement-the appropriate range of measurement distance and the pitch angle-were determined experimentally. Subsequently, an assembled platform was designed to firmly hold the sonar and conveniently move it under strong currents to effectively provide clear images of the pile. A strategy was developed to determine the appropriate number and horizontal and vertical positions of the measurement points around each pile in the pile group, particularly to avoid the obstruction of signal propagation caused by adjacent piles and pile caps. The method was applied to the scanning of an underwater high-rise pile cap foundation of a bridge, and the results showed that the scanning ranges of the imaging sonar at all arranged measurement points were not affected by adjacent piles. The imaging sonar carried by the proposed platform could obtain clear images stably at a water speed of similar to 2.0 m/s and obtain all surface data of the pile quickly and completely.

Abstract :

Three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction based on sonar imaging is an intuitive and comprehensible form for describing an underwater defective pile. Most existing 3-D reconstruction methods are inefficient as they require the extraction of numerous feature points from many sonar images. A rapid 3-D reconstruction method for underwater defective piles based on two-dimensional (2-D) images obtained using mechanically scanned imaging sonar (MSIS) is proposed herein. First, the correspondences between the geometric features of MSIS images and actual defects are established based on the mapping relationship between actual object and MSIS image. Subsequently, no more than three feature points are extracted from 2-D MSIS images to recognize the contour segments. The contour segments are assembled into the entire cross section and then into the entire defective pile. The applicability of the proposed method is verified via a 3-D reconstruction for a scaled-down pile with multiple defect distributions.

Experimental Studies on the Seismic Performance of Underwater Concrete Piers Strengthened by Self-Stressed Anti-Washout Concrete and Segments

Abstract :

Given that the existing drainage strengthening methods for underwater damaged piers are expensive, inefficient, and cause shipping traffic disruptions, an urgent need exists to explore undrained strengthening methods, such as the precast concrete segment assembly method (PCSAM). However, the PCSAM has certain limitations, including a considerable strength loss of filled concrete, poor accuracy, poor connection performance of the segment sleeves, etc. Hence, this study developed an improved PCSAM (IPCSAM) by adopting self-stressed anti-washout concrete (SSAWC) as the filling material and developing a lining concrete segment sleeve (LCSS) based on the design principle of shield tunnel lining segments. Subsequently, the seismic performance of the strengthened piers was investigated. First, nine 1/5-scale pier column specimens were designed by considering different influencing factors: the self-stress of the SSAWC, LCSS reinforcement ratio, and initial damage and length–diameter ratio of the pier column. These specimens were tested under low reversed cyclic loading. Second, an extended parameter analysis was performed based on the established numerical models consistent with the quasi-static test’s parameter settings. Finally, a restoring force model of the strengthened piers, including the trilinear skeleton curve model and hysteresis curve model, was established based on the results of the quasi-static test and parameter analysis. The results indicated that the bearing capacity, ductility, and initial stiffness of the specimens strengthened using the IPCSAM increased by approximately 83.5–106.4%, 16.3–50.2%, and 83.9–177.3%, respectively, with the energy dissipation capacity also significantly improved. The self-stress of the SSAWC should not exceed 2.2 MPa, and the recommended ratio of the LCSS thickness to pier column diameter is 1/10. Additionally, the proposed restoring force model is highly accurate and applicable, able to provide a reference for the practical seismic strengthening design of piers.
