Abstract :
Viologen is capable of generating radicals in response to an applied stimulus, giving it an abundance of stimuli responsive properties. However, the radical state of viologen is often unstable, which hinders further studies on the radical properties of viologen. In this paper, the salicylhydrazide group was chosen as a donor group to bond with mono-substituted bipyridyl groups to obtain three novel D-A type viologen compounds. The compounds were harvested and characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, optical spectroscopy, EPR and DFT calculation, etc. The results show that compounds 1-3 adopt certain free radical states at room temperature under ambient light, which may be attributed to the electron-donating properties of the salicylhydrazide group and the degree of system conjugation. In addition, compound 1 has a hydrochromic property and compounds 2 and 3 have photocurrent effects under UV radiation. Three novel hydrazide viologen compounds were synthesized and studied by X-ray single crystal diffraction, and their stable free radical properties, hydrochromic properties and photocurrent effects were studied.

Abstract :
As an emerging isoxazoline insecticide, afoxolaner has a good effect in the prevention and treatment of canine parasite infections. During the crystallization process of afoxolaner, inconsistent crystal phases and thermal properties are observed in the same batch of samples. In this work, the solubility and crystallization process were studied, and the best method was found to be slow evaporation in ethanol. The results showed that the crystal phase was highly consistent. The average peak value of DSC was observed at 149.6 +/- 0.6 degrees C, with a relative mean deviation of only 0.4%. Furthermore, the isolation of needle-like single crystals allowed for the determination of the crystal structure, revealing the enantiomeric pairs of afoxolaner co-crystallized with water in a monoclinic crystal system belonging to the centrosymmetric space group P21/n. It is hoped that this study will provide important insights into the crystallographic data of afoxolaner for its practical applications.

Abstract :
The 6p orbit coupling of bismuth ions and the magnetism of iron ions endow bismuth-iron compounds with magnetic, optical and electrical properties. In this paper, non-rare-earth bismuth-iron crystals, KBa8Fe12(Bi6-xFex)O-38 (x = 0.2, 1.1, 2.0, 2.9, and 3.8), with a large magnetocaloric effect were prepared by a hydrothermal method. The structure-function relationship is discussed. With the increase of the Fe content, the lattice parameters and unit cell volume decrease, while the magnetization intensity shows an increase on the whole and a fluctuation at the same time. The increase of the Fe content can improve the magnetocaloric effect. Importantly, the maximum magnetic entropy change (Delta S-M) of KBa8Fe12(Bi4.9Fe1.1)O-38 is as high as 1.54 J kg(-1) K-1 at the low temperature of 2 K.

Abstract :
Recently, scientists have reported a range of chiral fluorescence materials or chiral composites that can emit circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, two achiral metal-organic colloidal solutions were studied, showing active circularly polarized luminescence, which is observed in vortex stirring. The absolute values for g(lum) are 0.05 and 0.03 and the plus or minus sign of g(lum) depends on the colloidal structure and stirring direction, which make the property easy to manipulate. Further, the host-guest interaction study suggests both electrostatic interactions and coordination bonding may influence the chiroptical property from the colloidal solution to the guest molecule. Rhodamine 6G and its carboxylic acid derivative exhibit good quantum yields and acceptable g(lum) values in the colloidal solution.

Abstract :
Chiral compounds are known to be important not only because they are the fundamental components of living organisms, but also for their unique chiroptical properties. In recent years, scientists have fabricated several chiral organic supramolecular aggregates by using chiral physical fields, such as vortex flow. Herein, the relationship between dynamic chiroptical properties and rheological nature is discussed, suggesting the shear thinning properties of non-Newtonian fluids might help colloidal particles adopt a chiral arrangement in vortices. Furthermore, the storage modulus of colloids could be increased by adding a linking agent, which successfully kept the dynamic chiroptical properties in the static state. Moreover, the salt effect on the host-guest interaction involved in the colloids was studied, the results suggested a significant enhancement of the transferred dynamic circular dichroism for the achiral guest molecule.

Abstract :
The skins of frogs of the family Ranidae are particularly rich sources of biologically active peptides, among which antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) constitute the major portion. Some of these have attracted the interest of researchers because they possess both antimicrobial and anticancer activities. In this study, with 'shotgun' cloning and MS/MS fragmentation, three AMPs, homologues of family brevinin-1 (brevinin-1HL), and temporin (temporin-HLa and temporin-HLb), were discovered from the skin secretion of the broad-folded frog, Hylarana latouchii. They exhibited various degrees of antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against test microorganisms and hemolysis on horse erythrocytes. It was found that they could induce bacteria death through disrupting cell membranes and binding to bacterial DNA. In addition, they also showed different potencies towards human cancer cell lines. The secondary structure and physicochemical properties of each peptide were investigated to preliminarily reveal their structure-activity relationships. Circular dichroism spectrometry showed that they all adopted a canonical a-helical conformation in membrane-mimetic solvents. Notably, the prepropeptide of brevinin-1HL from H. latouchii was highly identical to that of brevinin-1GHd from Hylarana guentheri, indicating a close relationship between these two species. Accordingly, this study provides candidates for the design of novel anti-infective and antineoplastic agents to fight multidrug-resistant bacteria and malignant tumors and also offers additional clues for the taxonomy of ranid frogs.

Abstract :
A novel stilbene-based salicylhydrazone compound {systematic name: (E)-4,4'-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis[(N'E)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide] dimethyl sulfoxide disolvate, C30H24N4O4 center dot 2C(2)H(6)OS or L center dot 2DMSO} was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction and luminescence spectroscopy. The title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, with half a symmetry-independent L molecule and one dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent molecule in the asymmetric unit. The L molecule adopts an almost planar structure, with a small dihedral angle between the planes of the stilbene and salicylhydrazone groups. There are multiple pi-pi stacking interactions between adjacent L molecules. The DMSO solvent molecules act as proton donors and acceptors, forming hydrogen bonds of various strengths with the L molecules. In addition, the geometry optimization of a single molecule of L and its luminescence properties either in solution, as a solvated solid or as a desolvated solid were studied. The compound shows an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect and exhibits switchable luminescence colouration in the solid state by the simple removal or re-addition of the DMSO solvent.
