Abstract :
In this letter, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided dual M-ary differential chaos shift keying (RIS-DM-DCSK) system for non-coherent chaotic communications. In RIS-DM-DCSK, a dual M-ary DCSK signal is designed to transmit twice the number of modulated bits compared to a standard M-ary DCSK signal while permutation index modulation is employed to convey additional index bits, thereby enhancing energy efficiency. Furthermore, we propose a permutation index detection and dual M-ary DCSK demodulation algorithm to recover the transmitted bits. The bit error probability (BEP) of RIS-DM-DCSK is analyzed over a Rayleigh fading channel. Numerical results show that the proposed RIS-DM-DCSK achieves superior bit error rate (BER) performance and energy efficiency compared to benchmark schemes.

Abstract :
Non-coherent chaotic communication has gained increasing attention as it provides an efficient solution for reliable communications without requiring channel state information. In this paper, we propose a non-coherent reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-empowered differential chaos shift keying scheme with two-level nested index modulation (RIS-DCSK-TLNIM). In the proposed RIS-DCSK-TLNIM scheme, the reference index and information index are nested to form two-level nested index modulation. This design enhances both the spectral efficiency and bit error rate (BER) performance of RIS-DCSK-TLNIM, albeit at the expense of slightly increased complexity. Furthermore, we propose a joint detection algorithm to recover the information bits transmitted via the reference index, information index, and two distinct-mode signals. We then extend RIS-DCSK-TLNIM into an enhanced system to achieve higher spectral efficiency. Subsequently, we analyze the BER performance, spectral efficiency, and system complexity of RIS-DCSK-TLNIM, and compare these metrics with those of benchmark systems. Comparison results demonstrate that the proposed RIS-DCSK-TLNIM, when configured with a small number of time slots, can achieve more than twice the spectral efficiency and at least a 6 dB gain in BER performance compared to benchmark systems.

Abstract :
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided spatial modulation (RIS-SM) and its variants utilize the indices of receiver antennas and RIS grouping to transmit additional information bits, with the limited performance for large inactivated RIS elements. To address this issue, we propose to exploit an activation mode index for RIS-SM (AMI-RIS-SM), where the RIS can operate in different activation modes during various time slots. In this way, its activation mode index, coupled with the receiver antenna index, can transmit more information bits. Furthermore, we propose maximum likelihood (ML) and low-complexity pre-greedy ML detections to recover the transmitted bits. We then derive the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed AMI-RIS-SM. The analytical and consistent simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve significant performance of up to a 4 dB gain over its counterparts.

Abstract :
In this paper, a quadruple code index modulation (QCIM) technique is proposed for low-complexity and spectral-efficient wireless transmission. The proposed QCIM scheme utilizes quadruple code indices in addition to M-ary phase shift keying symbols to transmit more information bits compared to conventional code index modulation (CIM) schemes. To recover the transmitted information bits, we propose maximum likelihood detection (MLD) and greedy detection (GD) algorithms for the proposed QCIM, with the GD algorithm offering almost the same bit error rate (BER) performance to the MLD algorithm but with significantly lower system complexity. Additionally, we extend QCIM into a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted QCIM (RIS-QCIM) system, which significantly enhances BER performance and eliminates the need for channel state information at the receiver. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed QCIM and RIS-QCIM achieve higher spectral efficiency and superior BER performance in contrast to benchmark schemes. © 2015 IEEE.
