Abstract :

Abstract :
A distinct rise of global interest in the role of cultural and creative industries in post-industrial urban development calls for the transformation of our industrial heritage into creative clusters. Despite many factories being removed in deindustrialization, some enterprises still preserve and reuse the former industrial lands. However, the inconclusive judgments on the performances of creative clusters call for an in-depth examination of the underlying mechanism of transforming dilapidated urban industrial spaces. In addition, few empirical studies have revealed the commonalities and differences of market entities employing both the top-down and bottom-up approaches during the redevelopment. In this article, a multilevel transformation, and the consequent spatial performance in three postindustrial lands in Beijing have been examined based on big data analysis, field observation and in-depth interviews. We reached three conclusions. First, in addition to the angle of participatory planning, the deep exploration of specific market entities as an intermediate joint among different parties in protecting and reusing the postindustrial lands uncovers a distinct perspective of urban revitalization. Second, the finding of the enterprises' role in mitigating the conflicts between bottom-up and top-down approaches further testifies to a less-dichotomous perspective in urban regeneration studies. Last, though the examination of the multilevel transformation mechanism reflecting the difference between state and nonstate enterprises in property-led management, a generic paradigm behind the trend of relying on enterprises in revitalizing the large-scale postindustrial lands is revealed.

Abstract :
Protecting large-scale heritage settlements from being damaged by fires has become increasingly crucial in developing areas that lack adequate legislation, emergency planning, and particularly efficient techniques. This study provides a systematic emergency assessment methodology for evaluating the accessibility of specific fire-fighting techniques to mitigate fire hazards in historical towns and examines how the integration of municipal and local fire services works. Specifically, this paper examines the accessibility of fire trucks, local fire services and the overall protection capacity. There are quantitative calculations of the obstruction degrees on main streets, the feasible moving distances of fire-fighting vehicles and firefighters at a given time, and the fire protection coverage and intensity in each town. Using these methods, this paper systematically assesses the fire resistance of three historical towns, Chuansha, Gaoqiao and Fengjing, as case studies. In contrast to previous studies focusing on the vulnerability of buildings in large historical settlements, this assessment method combines an examination of street networks and various emergency response techniques and is particularly applicable to developing areas.(c) 2022 Higher Education Press Limited Company. Abstract :
Given the ever-increasing auto dependence constituting a non-negligible portion of carbon emissions, unraveling the travel choice mechanism is crucial to designing effective sustainable urban policies. It is of great significance to investigate the impact of the residential built environment and travel attitude on travel behaviour. However, existing studies have not yet reached a consensus on the complex relationships between the built environment, travel attitude and travel behaviour. Thus, it is vital to further integrate other domains (e.g. job/employment) of an individual's life course to comprehensively understand individual travel behaviour.By integrating a novel perspective of knowledge typology (analytical, synthetic, and symbolic types of knowledge) in the job domain, this article further categorizes knowledge workers into three groups--scientific, engineering and creative workers. Based on the web survey data retrieved from 738 knowledge workers and 3924 other workers in Munich, both recursive and non-recursive structural equation models are applied to respectively estimate their travel choice mechanisms. Results show that "residential self-selection" applies more to creative workers, whereas "environmental determinism" applies more to engineering workers. The travel choice mechanism of scientific workers follows neither framework, with respect to no significant link between their residential environments and travel attitudes. In contrast, there coexist "environmental determinism" and "residential self-selection" among other workers.Regarding that the scientists, engineers and creatives potentially associate with heterogeneous travel choice rationales, future mobility studies in the era of knowledge economy should further integrate the job domain. Accordingly, "tailored-made" spatial and transport planning should be embedded in the local industrial structure and the variety of employment.
