Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Cross-cultural validation and measurement invariance of anxiety and depression symptoms: A study of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) in 42 countries SCIE SSCI
期刊论文 | 2024 , 350 , 991-1006 | JOURNAL OF AFFECTIVE DISORDERS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Background: Depression and anxiety are among the most prevalent mental health issues experienced worldwide. However, whereas cross-cultural studies utilize psychometrically valid and reliable scales, fewer can meaningfully compare these conditions across different groups. To address this gap, the current study aimed to psychometrically assess the Brief Symptomatology Index (BSI) in 42 countries. Methods: Using data from the International Sex Survey (N = 82,243; Mage = 32.39; SDage = 12.52; women: n = 46,874; 57 %), we examined the reliability of depression and anxiety symptom scores of the BSI -18, as well as evaluated evidence of construct, invariance, and criterion -related validity in predicting clinically relevant variables across countries, languages, genders, and sexual orientations. Results: Results corroborated an invariant, two -factor structure across all groups tested, exhibiting excellent reliability estimates for both subscales. The 'caseness' criterion effectively discriminated among those at low and high risk of depression and anxiety, yielding differential effects on the clinical criteria examined. Limitations: The predictive validation was not made against a clinical diagnosis, and the full BSI -18 scale was not examined (excluding the somatization sub -dimension), limiting the validation scope of the BSI -18. Finally, the study was conducted online, mainly by advertisements through social media, ultimately skewing our sample towards women, younger, and highly educated populations. Conclusions: The results support that the BSI-12 is a valid and reliable assessment tool for assessing depression and anxiety symptoms across countries, languages, genders, and sexual orientations. Further, its caseness criterion can discriminate well between participants at high and low risk of depression and anxiety.

Abstract :

Objective: We analyzed adult ADHD symptoms in a cross-cultural context, including investigating the occurrence and potential correlates of adult ADHD and psychometric examination of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) Screener. Method: Our analysis is based on a large-scale research project involving 42 countries (International Sex Survey, N=72,627, 57% women, Mage=32.84; SDage=12.57). Results: The ASRS Screener demonstrated good reliability and validity, along with partial invariance across different languages, countries, and genders. The occurrence of being at risk for adult ADHD was relatively high (21.4% for women, 18.1% for men). The highest scores were obtained in the US, Canada, and other English-speaking Western countries, with significantly lower scores among East Asian and non-English-speaking European countries. Moreover, ADHD symptom severity and occurrence were especially high among gender-diverse individuals. Significant associations between adult ADHD symptoms and age, mental and sexual health, and socioeconomic status were observed. Conclusions: Present results show significant cross-cultural variability in adult ADHD occurrence as well as highlight important factors related to adult ADHD. Moreover, the importance of further research on adult ADHD in previously understudied populations (non-Western countries) and minority groups (gender-diverse individuals) is stressed. Lastly, the present analysis is consistent with previous evidence showing low specificity of adult ADHD screening instruments and contributes to the current discussion on accurate adult ADHD screening and diagnosis.

Health information craving: Conceptualization, scale development and validation SCIE SSCI

Abstract :

Cyberchondria, involving the excessive and compulsive seeking of health information, has garnered escalating attention in recent years. One model proposes cyberchondria as an addictive behavior, and craving is considered a key driver of addictive behaviors. However, craving has yet to be systematically studied in the context of cyberchondria. Therefore, this study aimed to conceptualize a contruct of health information craving, develop, and validate a health information craving scale, intended for subsequent empirical examinations in the context of cyberchondria. We employed a rigorous multi-step procedure for scale development and validation, conducting three separate studies with 1633 participants. The resulting scale of health information craving exhibited a multi-dimensional structure with positive and negative reinforcing sub-scales, as confirmed through diverse reliability and validity assessments. As expected, the scale demonstrated a positive relationship with individuals' cyberchondria, thus providing support for the nomological validity of the developed scale. Furthermore, the findings suggest that health information craving should be considered a related but distinct concept from another similar concept, health information need, thereby offering further support for its operationalization. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

How health risk of COVID-19 resurgence may trigger individual tendencies regarding COVID-19-related cyberchondria: Investigating the I-PACE model SCIE SSCI
期刊论文 | 2024 , 61 (4) | INFORMATION PROCESSING & MANAGEMENT
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Cyberchondria during the COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to public wellbeing. Previous lstudies have implicated perceived health risk in COVID-19-related cyberchondria. However, the effect of perceived COVID-19 health risk on cyberchondria and potential underlying mechanisms remains unclear. In this study, we developed a model based on the general addictive behavior framework of the I-PACE (Interaction-Person-Affect-CognitionExecution) model to describe how induction of health risk of COVID-19 resurgence may influence individual tendencies regarding COVID-19-related cyberchondria. Through a scenario-based experiment, we tested this model with a balanced sample of 984 participants from China. The results revealed that the effect of induction of health risk of COVID-19 resurgence on tendencies regarding COVID-19-related cyberchondria was fully mediated by individual's risk perception and health information craving. Additionally, moderation analysis showed that an individual's general inhibitory control did not moderate the development of cyberchondria. Theoretical and practical implications are provided.

The social status of women in China: Analysis based on age, period, and cohort effects SSCI
期刊论文 | 2024 | ASIAN JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The present study examined the social status of women in China by reviewing the levels and trends of objective and subjective socioeconomic status and gender role attitudes. We employed a hierarchical age-period-cohort analysis and used repeated cross-sectional data from the 2010 to 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (N = 52,927), a nationwide probability survey. The study found that for both males and females, differences in age effects were more pronounced than period and cohort effects. Specifically, there were no significant gender differences in levels of education. However, women start at a lower level of occupational prestige and income than men. Particularly in late adulthood, the rate of decline in income is significantly faster for women than for adult men. Chinese women's gender role attitudes interact with their objective socioeconomic status. Subjectively, China's awareness and recognition of gender equality and women's rights and interests are increasing, but objective gender inequality still exists, and there are many challenges to be addressed.

Influence of facial dimorphism on interpersonal trust: weighing warmth and competence traits in different trust situations SSCI
期刊论文 | 2023 , 43 (3) , 2158-2172 | CURRENT PSYCHOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

When interacting with strangers, people tend to draw inferences pertaining to the strangers' personality traits based on their facial information, which leads to differential feelings of trust for the strangers. This study explored whether the weightage which individuals' provide to facial warmth and competence changes with social situations when they have to make decisions based on trust. In experiment 1, a donation context was set, and the participants tended to select a stranger volunteer with feminine face as the recipient of a higher donation amount. In experiment 2, an investment context was set, and while interacting with male trustees, the participants tended to select masculine male faces as recipients of a higher investment amount. However, a contradictory result was obtained when the participants interacted with the female trustees. Participants' perceptions of the trustworthiness of the four kinds of faces (feminine or masculine male faces, feminine or masculine female faces) predicted the corresponding donation and investment amounts. The results indicated that feminine faces (both male and female) were preferred as recipients of donation, and the warmth in the faces was given more weightage in the donation context (warmth perception). In the investment context (competence perception), participants tended to choose masculine faces as recipients of investment amount among the male faces but showed a preference for feminine faces among female faces. The research provides empirical support for a better understanding of the mechanisms behind highly flexible and complex social interactions among humans.

Abstract :

Frequent consumption of sexually explicit material (SEM) on the internet may influence attitudes toward sex (e.g., sociosexuality), and sociosexuality may influence people's preferences for potential partners' facial dimorphism. However, few studies have focused on the association between dimorphism preference and pornography consumption, and fewer have examined it in heterosexual-identifying and homosexual-identifying men. A total of 234 heterosexual-identifying and 133 homosexual-identifying men were asked to respond to questions regarding their preferences toward facial dimorphism, sociosexual orientation, and frequency of viewing SEM. Frequency of SEM consumption was related to sociosexuality and preference for potential partners' sex-typical facial features, sociosexuality worked as a full mediator in this relationship, and similar mediating associations were found among heterosexual-identifying and homosexual-identifying men. The results identified associations between consumption of pornographic material and sexual dimorphic preference for the first time. Findings suggest not only that homosexual-identifying men prefer masculinity in same-sex partners but also that the sexual script theory that pornographic material consumption may influence men's short-term relationship orientation among sexual minorities and under a conservative sexual culture. This study contributes to the understanding of the preference for facial dimorphism from a perspective on social learning and mate choice.
