Abstract :
Collision loads in actual safety accidents are complex, and the direction of loads on structures is uncertain. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the energy absorption mechanism of the protective structure under the oblique impact loading. In this paper, a kind of the aluminum foam-filled multi-cell conical (AFMTC) tube was designed and manufactured, and its finite element model was established and validated. Based on Complex Proportional Assessment (COPRAS) method and Radar graph, the influence of oblique impact loading (angle, speed and action point) on the energy absorption performance was studied, and the coupled energy absorption mechanism was revealed. It is found that the four-cell structure of AFMTC (AFMTC-N4) tube has the best anti-tilt performance and the overall energy absorption is stable when the impact angle is 0°∼20°. In addition, the change of action point shows insensitivity to the energy absorption characteristics. Finally, the coupled effect makes the deformation mode of the AFMTC tube regular and efficient, and the energy absorption effect is better. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Abstract :
Coupled energy absorption effect between the aluminum foam and the thin-walled tube plays a significant role in the crushing process. Firstly, a composite structure filled with aluminum foam in a multi-cell conical tube is proposed. Secondly, the influence of structure parameters on coupled energy absorption is investigated. Thirdly, the energy absorption mechanism is analyzed. Additionally, the structure is subjected to multi-objective optimization. The results show that increasing structure parameters are beneficial to coupled energy absorption effect. In addition, there are SEA = 26.18 J/g and FP =86.22 kN for the optimal tube, which is superior to most existing aluminum foam-filled tubes.

Abstract :
In this study, SEM observation showed that in four different CB/NRs, as the amount of filled CB increased, CB agglomeration became more serious, and the CB shape wasn't a simple sphere. Combining FEA with machine learning, the study optimized CB particle structure parameters, shape, and the aspect ratio of the ellipse. Using these optimized parameters, it established a 3D stochastic model without aggregates and a 3D model with aggregates to study the uniaxial tensile mechanical behavior of CB/NRs, adopting the Mooney-Rivlin phenomenological model. The results indicated that the ellipsoidal particle model was slightly better than the spherical one in predicting the mechanical behavior of CB/NRs. Specifically, the Random Forest algorithm fitting, cross-validation, and grid search for hyperparameters to obtain the minimum RMSE had high prediction accuracy and fitting effectiveness. The optimal aspect ratio range was determined to be 2.2-2.4. Moreover, compared with experimental results, the RVE model with aggregates described the constitutive behavior of CB/NRs more accurately, better addressed the large deviations between FE simulation and experimental curves at high CB volume fractions in CB/NRs, and provided modeling solutions for CB/NRs.

The temperature field of tires has a significant impact on the cracking aging and service life of tires. Therefore, the finite element simulations of the temperature field of the mining tire were carried out in this paper. The temperatures of the key parts of the tire were measured with the thermocouple under real working conditions. The deviation between the results of the simulation and the measurement is 1.3%. In addition, the function among the maximum temperature, the velocity and sinking amount of the tire was fitted using the simulating results of the temperature field under the nine types of working conditions. Further, based on the response surface method, the structure of the 1# strap layer with high temperature of the tire was optimised by taking the width of the strap layer, the distribution density of the steel wire and the angle of the steel wire arrangement as the independent variables, and the maximum temperature of the tire under steady rolling as the response value. Finally, the results show that the maximum temperature of the optimised model decreases by 3.06 degrees C compared to the original model.

Abstract :
Determination of tensile properties is essential for the design and strength assessment of structures. In this study, a modified small punch test (SPT), known as the single-stress small punch test (SS-SPT), was proposed to investigate the tensile properties of five ductile homogeneous materials, namely P91, Q245R, 316SS, 1045 steel, and 2024Al. The SS-SPT specimen was subjected to a single stress state when subjected to a punch force, similar to that of a uniaxial tensile test (UTT) specimen. Additionally, UTT and standard SPT were carried out to investigate the tensile properties of these materials. The thickness of failed standard SPT and SS-SPT specimens was measured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the equivalent fracture strain was calculated. Correlation relationships between each type of SPT and UTT results were established. Experimental results indicated that both the SS-SPT and standard SPT demonstrated comparable accuracy in determining yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, and tensile elongation. However, the SS-SPT exhibited greater accuracy than the standard SPT in determining fracture strain due to direct measurement of the thinnest thickness from the fracture in failed SS-SPT specimens.

Abstract :
Tensile properties play a critical role in characterizing the mechanical behavior of cladding tubes. In this study, a modified small punch test (SPT) called single stress small punch test (SS-SPT) was proposed to investigate the axial tensile properties of cladding tubes. Semi-cylindrical SS-SPT specimens, directly prepared from cladding tubes, were subjected to a single stress state under an applied punch force. Finite element simulation results demonstrated that determining both yield stress and ultimate tensile stress using the SS-SPT was not only feasible but also accurate. Moreover, the axial tensile properties of a FeCrAl cladding tube were investigated using the SSSPT. It was observed that the determined axial yield stress and ultimate tensile stress of the FeCrAl cladding tube exhibited a reduction of 7 %, compared to those obtained from axial uniaxial tensile tests.

Abstract :
Owing to the harsh working environment in which mining trucks operate, tires tend to fail prematurely. In this study, using 53/80R63 tires as the research object, two- and three-dimensional finite element models (FEM) of tires were established. A steady-state rolling simulation analysis was carried out. A crack growth test was performed on the rubber material, and the test data were fitted using the least squares method to obtain the fatigue parameters required in this study. According to the simulation results of steady-state rolling, fatigue life prediction under different working conditions was performed using fe-safeTM software, and the effects of different load rates, inflation pressures, and vehicle speeds on tire fatigue life were analyzed. The results show that when the inflation pressure and vehicle speed were constant, with an increase in load, the life of the belt layer and the sidewall part gradually decreased, and the life of the chewing rubber part displayed a sharp decreasing trend. Under the condition of constant load and vehicle speed, with an increase of inflation pressure, the life of the belt layer gradually decreased, and the life of the sidewall part decreased significantly. Under constant load and inflation pressure, vehicle speed had little effect on the tire fatigue life.

Abstract :
Several methods have been developed to determine the axial creep properties of nuclear fuel cladding tubes. However, the anisotropic creep properties of nuclear fuel cladding tubes requires that their circumferential creep behaviour be evaluated as well. Nonetheless, this task remains extremely challenging owing to need to employ unaltered cylindrical cladding tube specimens directly and the general low accuracy of the methods developed for this purpose. The present work addresses these issues by developing a modified small punch creep test (SPCT). Equations are proposed to calculate the creep stress and strain of the modified SPCT. The accuracy of the equations is analysed using the finite element method. Finally, the methodology is applied to investigate the circumferential creep behaviour of an FeCrAl nuclear fuel cladding tube experimentally. These results clearly demonstrate that the modified SPCT is suitable for investigating the creep behaviour of irregularly shaped material specimens with anisotropic creep properties. Moreover, the semi -cylindrical specimens employed in the modified SPCT also enable the effective fracture strain of the specimen to be easily determined.

Abstract :
Inspired by the microstructure of the beetle's elytra, a new bionic polycellular tube protective structure based on the fractal principle was proposed in this paper, and its energy absorption characteristics were studied. Firstly, the typical microstructures of two-branch structure (type A), three-branch structure (type B) and mixed-branch structure (type C) of the beetle's elytra were extracted. Based on that, three types of the bionic multicellular thinwalled circular tube (BMTC) were designed, and the reliability of finite element models was verified by experiments. Secondly, the energy absorption characteristics and crushing mechanism of three groups of BMTCs were compared and analyzed by LS-DYNA software, and the analytical expression of mean crushing force (Fm) for BMTCs was established. The results show that the energy absorption structures of type B have better comprehensive energy absorption characteristics. Compared with the traditional ribbed structure, specific energy absorption (SEA) of BMTCs is increased by 36.75 %. In addition, when the central column is connected to the three ribs, the central column has the best deformation resistance. Moreover, the theoretical solutions matched well with the results of numerical simulation. Consequently, the research results provide inspiration for the design of energy absorption protection devices, and theoretical guidance for the analysis of energy absorption characteristics.
