道德自我知觉对亲社会行为的影响:情境公开性的调节作用
期刊论文 | 2025 , 13 (2) , 74-81 | 心理技术与应用
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Achieving nature-human harmony: awe brings benevolence through nature connectedness SSCI
期刊论文 | 2025 , 44 (10) , 8619-8636 | CURRENT PSYCHOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Awe is often experienced as a spiritual emotion. We aim to clarify how and when awe contributes to benevolence, a prosocial orientation. Across five studies (N = 1,024), we investigated how awe enhances connecting to others, in part, via nature connectedness. Results revealed a positive indirect effect of awe on benevolence (Study 1) through nature connectedness (Study 2-4), which overweighted beyond joy (Study 3 and 4), self-smallness and authentic-self pursuit (Study 4). Notably, when awe is threat-based, the main effect on benevolence is nonsignificant, due to awe contributing to benevolence, but co-occurring fear hindering it (Study 5). Overall, our studies underscore the mediating role of nature connectedness in explaining how awe facilitates benevolence, offering new insight into awe's prosocial effects, and furnishing empirical support for enhancing prosocial behavior through the interplay between the natural environment and social realm.

Closer People Hurt You More: How Social Distance Modulates Deception-Triggered Trust Decline and Trust Repair Scopus
期刊论文 | 2025 , 60 (5) | International Journal of Psychology
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Close relationships generally help foster and sustain interpersonal trust, but also intensify harm when trust is violated by deception. Based on Expectancy Violation Theory and Decision System Theory, this study explored how social distance moderates the impact of deception on trust through three experiments. In Study 1 (N = 86), deception by acquaintances (vs. strangers) resulted in a higher decline in trust. Building on this, Study 2 (N = 202) further examined mediating mechanisms, indicating that the deception of acquaintances reduces trust more by causing negative emotions, while deception of strangers affects trust more by decreasing integrity perception. From the perspective of trust repair, Study 3 (N = 51) found that apologies from acquaintances were more effective in restoring trust, revealing the deeper role of the deceiver's social distance on trust dynamics. Results suggest that deception at different social distances has distinct effects on trust-related outcomes, thereby deepening the understanding of the relationship between social distance and trust, and offering practical guidance for managing trust violations in social relationships. © 2025 International Union of Psychological Science.

How to apologize more effectively: the impact of trust repair timing and apology attribution on trust repair SSCI
期刊论文 | 2025 , 44 (10) , 8865-8879 | CURRENT PSYCHOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Trust is a critical yet fragile component of interpersonal interactions, often leading to significant consequences when compromised. This has propelled trust repair to the forefront of academic research. Despite extensive investigations, effective strategies and optimal timing for trust repair have remained poorly understood. This study aimed to identify the most effective timing for trust repair and to evaluate how different apology attribution modes impact its effectiveness at various timings. In Study 1, our research explored the dynamics between trust repair timing and apologies through scenario simulation. We found that later apologies were more effective. However, a further decline in trust occurred if victims did not receive an apology after they had expressed their emotions and thoughts. In Study 2, we divided apologies into distinct attribution modes and observed a significant interaction with trust repair timing. In early trust repair, the apology attribution modes demonstrated comparable effectiveness, but during the later trust repair, internally attributed apologies significantly outperformed externally attributed ones. Study 3 reinforced these findings by altering the types of interpersonal relationship and the consequence of trust breach in a trust game, thereby solidifying our conclusions. This research provides empirical support for how to make more targeted apologies in real-life situations.

Can we return good for evil? A meta-analysis of social exclusion and prosocial behaviour SSCI
期刊论文 | 2025 , 64 (2) | BRITISH JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Numerous studies have discussed the connection between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour, yet the conclusions have been inconsistent. We conducted a three-level meta-analysis on 83 effect sizes derived from 53 studies (N = 21,405). Overall, a significant yet weak negative correlation was found between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour (r = -.10, 95% CI [-0.17, -0.04]). Moderator analysis revealed that individuals in collectivistic cultures may exhibit higher levels of prosocial behaviour following exclusion compared to those in individualistic cultures. The female proportion positively influenced the overall effect size. The type of prosocial behaviour was marginally significant, in that 'other' prosocial behaviour yielded the largest effect sizes. However, effects did not differ across age groups, between the inclusion condition and the neutral condition, or between experimental research and correlational research. Our results underscore the crucial roles of culture and gender in the relationship between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour.

“Choose what suits you”: The role of relative competency strength in shaping job applicants’ reactions and strategies toward AI-based interview Scopus
期刊论文 | 2025 , 19 | Computers in Human Behavior Reports
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in work contexts significantly breeds organizational practices of AI-based personnel recruitment and selection in recent years. Despite its benefits for organizations, whether job applicants favor the adoption of AI-based interview remains unclear. In the present research, we draw on expectancy theory to propose a contingent model explaining when and why applicants are more willing to accept an AI-based interview (vs. human-based interview). We introduce relative competency strength to identify whether AI-based interviews fit their applicants' unique competency. Across three experimental studies (total N = 760), we found that AI-based interview (vs. human-based interview) induced both higher uniqueness neglect expectations and higher fairness expectations of applicants. Moreover, applicants' relative competency strength moderated the impacts on both expectations separately. Specifically, applicants with higher cognitive competency strength had stronger fairness expectations and applicants with higher non-cognitive competency strength had stronger uniqueness neglect expectations, which further differentiated their subsequent job seeking strategies. Overall, our research implies that job applicants' reactions toward AI-based interviews depend on their recognition of their relative competency strength, suggesting an adaptive approach to job applications. © 2025

Serve Yourself or Serve Your Students? How and When Supervisor Narcissism is Related to Mental Health of Graduate Students SSCI
期刊论文 | 2024 , 17 , 3555-3571 | PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH AND BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Background: The mental health of graduate students is increasingly turning into one of the main issues in global health. Understanding the antecedents of graduate students' mental health and finding ways to improve the situation are crucial for the students and the entire educational system. Purpose: This study explores the relationship between supervisor narcissism and graduate students' mental health. Additionally, the study examines the mediating effects of mentorship styles (relationship-oriented and task-oriented) and the moderating role of student's proactive personality. Methods: This study conducted a three-wave survey, with each wave administered at four-month intervals, involving 547 graduate students. They completed questionnaires on supervisor narcissism, mentorship styles, proactive personality, and mental health. SPSS 26.0 was used to test our hypotheses. Results: This study indicated that: (1) Supervisor narcissism was negatively associated with graduate students' mental health, fully mediated by relationship-oriented and task-oriented mentorships; (2) Graduate students' proactive personalities moderated the relationship between these mentorship styles and their mental health; (3) Graduate students' proactive personalities moderated the indirect effect of supervisor narcissism on students' mental health through these mentorship styles. Conclusion: This study reveals the detrimental mechanisms through which supervisor narcissism affects graduate students' mental health. It also demonstrates that enhancing students' proactive personalities can mitigate these adverse effects. These findings provide empirical evidence within the context of higher education. Practical implications are provided for supervisors, students, and university administrators, emphasizing the importance of effectively matching supervisors with students and promoting students' proactive personalities. These measures are essential for improving the mental health of graduate students.

How supervisor Machiavellianism affects graduate student creativity: a mediated moderation model SSCI
期刊论文 | 2024 , 50 (9) , 1871-1886 | STUDIES IN HIGHER EDUCATION
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Innovation and creativity are essential for graduate education, and supervisors have a substantial responsibility to foster the creative abilities of graduate students. However, empirical studies investigating how supervisor personality affects graduate student creativity are rare. To enhance the ability of higher education institutions to cultivate creativity among graduate students, we examined how supervisor Machiavellianism leads graduate students to perceived objectification, reducing graduate student creative performance based on the Job Demands-Resources model and Job-Demand-Control-Support theory. We proposed personal initiative as the moderator to explore boundary conditions of the relationship between supervisor Machiavellianism and perceived objectification. Results from 326 graduate students across three time points indicated that supervisor Machiavellianism negatively affects graduate students' creative performance, and graduate students' perceived objectification fully mediates the relationship. Additionally, graduate student personal initiative moderated this relationship. Graduate students with high personal initiative can mitigate the negative effects of Machiavellian supervisors. Our findings emphasize the significance of considering the individual traits of both supervisors and graduate students in graduate education with valuable theoretical and practical implications discussed.

Wherefore art thou competitors? How situational affordances help differentiate among prosociality, individualism, and competition SSCI

Abstract :

The Triple Dominance Measure (choosing between prosocial, individualistic, and competitive options) and the Slider Measure ("sliding" between various orientations, for example, from individualistic to prosocial) are two widely used techniques to measure social value orientation, that is, the weight individuals assign to own and others' outcomes in interdependent situations. Surprisingly, there is only moderate correspondence between these measures, but it is unclear why and what the implications are for identifying individual differences in social value orientation. Using a dataset of 8021 participants from 31 countries and regions, this study revealed that the Slider Measure identified fewer competitors than the Triple Dominance Measure, accounting for approximately one-third of the non-correspondence between the two measures. This is (partially) because many of the Slider items do not afford a competitive option. In items where competition is combined with individualism, competitors tended to make the same choices as individualists. Futhermore, we demonstrated the uniqueness of competitors. Compared to prosocials and individualists, competitors exhibited lower levels of both social mindfulness and trust. Overall, the present work highlights the importance of situational affordances in measuring personality, the benefits of distinguishing between individualists and competitors, and the importance of utilizing a measure that distinguishes between these two proself orientations.
