Performance Evaluation and Modification Mechanism of Red Clay Treated with Lignosulfonate SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 22 (11) , 1961-1976 | INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Red clay exhibits characteristics such as softening owing to water absorption and cracking because of water loss, which can lead to slope instability, road cracking, and compromised structural integrity when used directly in roadbed filling. Although the addition of industrial materials such as cement is a common engineering treatment, it severely impairs soil renewability. Lignosulfonate (LS) extracted from paper plant waste fluids is a natural bio-based polymer with promising applications as a soil improver. In this study, the boundary moisture content and mechanical properties of LS-treated red clay were investigated using Atterberg, unconfined compressive strength, and direct shear strength tests. Additionally, the LS-treated red clay modification mechanism was explored at multiple scales using zeta potential analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the LS dosage significantly affected both the water content and mechanical strength of the red clay boundaries. The optimal dosage of LS for red clay was 3 wt. %, at which the liquid limit was reduced by 32.97%, the plastic limit by 19.33%, and the plasticity index by 48.37%. The 28-day compressive strength of LS-treated red clay was increased by 378.4%, and the direct shear strength was increased by 136%. Analysis of the microstructure and mineral composition revealed that the LS-treated red clay did not form new minerals, but primarily filled pores and connected soil particles. Through the combined effects of hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and cation exchange, the LS-treated red clay reduced the size of the mineral particles and the thickness of the mineral double electric layer, resulting in increased structural densification. These results are of great scientific significance for the ecological modification of soils.

Abstract :

Red clay is a special soil that loses water and shrinks easily, which causes expansion and contraction and leads to the generation and development of cracks, weakening the strength and engineering properties of the soil. This investigation analyzed the mechanism of crack evolution and patterns of strength decay in red clay under dry-wet cycles and established a relationship between strength and crack ratio by employing image processing techniques and conducting direct shear tests on red clay with various initial moisture contents and humidification times. The results show that the crack ratio increases with the number of dry-wet cycles and eventually tends to be stable after the fourth dry-wet cycle, and the stress-displacement curve of red clay changes from weak hardening to hardening. With the progress of the dry and wet cycles, the shear strength indexes of red clay decrease extensively, displaying a negative association with the sample's initial moisture content and the duration of humidification. Based on the experimental result, a quadratic function was established to model the relationship between soil cracking ratio and shear strength, which can predict the shear strength of red clay from the cracking ratio.

Fracture propagation characteristics of pre-cracked red clay in roadbed filling under three-point bending EI
期刊论文 | 2024 , 133 | Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Red clay was a special roadbed filling soil that was easy to expand and shrink because of the characteristics of high liquid limit and high porosity, leading to the appearance of a large number of cracks. In order to understand the cracking mechanism and nonlinear fracture failure process of red clay, the fracture toughness and crack sensitivity of red clay with different saturation, compaction and gravel content were analyzed by three-point bending cracking experiment and Image processing technology, and then the cohesive crack model was established to describe the fracture toughness. The results showed that the cracking process of red clay could be divided into three stages: crack incubation period, crack initiation and propagation period and visible cracks appearance stage. There was a conic function relationship between fracture toughness and saturation and a positive correlation between fracture toughness and compactness. The influence of gravel content on the final fracture path of red clay was the most significant, while the effects of saturation and compaction could be ignored. In addition, the fracture toughness converted from the cohesive crack model was basically as the same as the measured. This work provided a basis for theoretical analysis and numerical calculation for the fracture toughness of red clay under three-point bending. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Red clay is highly susceptible to cracking due to its nature, and the reduction in strength caused by cracking can lead to engineering disasters. To investigate the cracking sensitivity of red clay, a homogeneous fracture model of red clay based on the cohesive zone model was established using ABAQUS in this work, the reliability of the model was verified through a three-point bending test, and then the crack propagation process and sensitivity to test factors of red clay were further analyzed. The results show that the fracture simulation of the cohesive zone model is in good agreement with the test results, confirming by the high reliability. The depth of prefabricated cracks and fulcrum spacing had the significant effects on the crack path, and the decrease of prefabricated crack depth and fulcrum spacing led to the increase of critical load. Meanwhile, the loading rate had little effect on the load-displacement curves.

Abstract :

To address the strength damage of red clay under dry-wet cycles, systematic conventional triaxial tests under specific circumferential pressure and scanning electron microscope observation were carried out to describe the damage evolution of soil units under load conditions of dry-wet cycle red clay microunits based on the Weibull distribution. Damage variable expressions obeying the Weibull distribution were established and the micro-parameter pore area ratio and the macro-parameter dry-wet cycle number were introduced. The cross-scale characterization of macroscopic and microscopic parameters was realized by combining the damage mechanics equation of red clay under loading. The microscopic damage intrinsic model of red clay considering the number of dry-wet cycles was constructed. The model was verified to be reasonable and effective based on triaxial tests, in which the calculation errors of the secant modulus damage threshold, probability density function shape parameter, and dry-wet cycle red clay damage stress were within 10 %, 5 %, and 5 %, respectively.

Novel rejuvenators for sustainable recycling of aged SBS modified bitumen: Performance evaluation and reactive mechanism analysis SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The performance of aged styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified bitumen (SMB) is jointly dominated by the aging of bitumen and degradation of SBS crosslinking network structure. Despite some epoxy reactive rejuvenators which can re-crosslink SBS fragments are able to reconstruct the SBS cross-linking network compared with conventional rejuvenator, the performance of aged SMB regenerated by existing epoxy reactive reactants is unbalanced achieving good low temperature performance by sacrificing high temperature performance. In order to further improve the comprehensive road performance of regenerated SMB, a novel reactive rejuvenator was proposed and assessed in this study aiming at effectively improving the high temperature performance of regenerated SMB. The restoration effectiveness of the reactive rejuvenators was evaluated and compared by the physical properties, rheological properties and FTIR of rejuvenated SMB. The physical and rheological experimental results show that 2,2'-[1,3-phenylenebis (oxymethylene)] dioxirane (RDGE) and 1,6-hexanediol diglycidyl ether (HDDGE) are beneficial to high and low temperature performance of regenerated SMB, respectively, and their composite action can complement each other. Compared with N, N-dimthylbenzylamine (BDMA), 3,6,9,12-tetraazatetradecane-1,14-diamine (PEHA) with crosslinking effect can excellently make up for the disadvantages of epoxy rejuvenator, which has better and balanced recovery effect in consideration of both low and high temperature properties of regenerated SMB. The reactive rejuvenator containing PEHA and RDGE can further alleviate high temperature performance loss of regenerated SMB by an appropriate mix ratio. The changes of chemical functional groups of FTIR and fluorescence microscope directly prove that a novel recovery reaction for degraded SBS network structure via the introduction of PEHA (a kind of polybasic primary amines) is conducive to balancing high and low temperature performance of regenerated SMB.

Multi-scale evaluation of sodium dodecyl sulfate intercalated LDHs on the ageing resistance of SBS modified bitumen SCIE
期刊论文 | 2023 , 406 | CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING MATERIALS
WoS CC Cited Count: 6
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were prepared to enhance the ageing resistance of SBS modified bitumen (SMB). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that SDS has been intercalated into the interlayers of LDHs. Compared to LDHs, the interaction between SDS intercalated LDHs (OLDHs) and SMB was obviously stronger, and OLDHs exhibited better dispersity and stability in SMB. After ageing, the viscoelastic properties of SMB were deteriorated. LDHs and OLDHs could obviously alleviate the deterioration of ageing on the properties of SMB, which could improve the ageing resistance of SMB, especially OLDHs. Additionally, the enhancement mechanisms of OLDHs and LDHs for the ageing resistance of SMB at the microscopic scale were investigated by molecular dynamics. The incor-poration of LDHs could obstruct the invasion of oxygen into the interior of SMB and inhibit the diffusion rate of oxygen in SMB, which reduced the oxidation reaction probability of SMB during ageing, and eventually achieved the improvement on ageing resistance of SMB. The effectiveness of LDHs was further improved after SDS intercalated modification, that was, SDS intercalated modification was beneficial to enhance the ageing resis-tance of LDHs for SMB.

Experiments and Modeling of the Attenuation of the Dynamic Elastic Modulus of Saturated Red Clay under Cyclic Loading SCIE SSCI

Abstract :

Due to the long-term effect of cyclic traffic loads, the accumulated deformation of red clay subgrades is increasing, strength is decreasing, and problems such as uneven settlement are occurring. In order to improve the stability and durability of red clay subgrade, this paper analyzes the effects of cyclic stress ratios and compactness on the development of the dynamic elastic modulus of saturated red clay. This is achieved through dynamic triaxial tests on red clay in the Qingyuan County, Zhejiang Province, China. The results show that the saturated red clay has an attenuation threshold cyclic stress ratio under cyclic loading. The attenuation threshold cyclic stress ratio prediction models were constructed based on the confining pressure and compactness, respectively. By introducing the concept of a relative cyclic stress ratio, the prediction model of the dynamic elastic modulus of saturated red clay (as based on cyclic vibration times and close cyclic stress ratio) is constructed. The model realizes the prediction of the dynamic elastic modulus of red clay under arbitrary cyclic vibration times via the initial cyclic stress ratio, compactness, and other parameters. It provides a theoretical basis for rationally evaluating the dynamic stability of red clay subgrade under cyclic loading.

Evaluation of asphalt ageing degree based on asphalt color ESCI
期刊论文 | 2023 , 5 (1) | ENGINEERING RESEARCH EXPRESS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

To understand the relationship between the surface color and ageing of asphalt, the evaluation method for asphalt surface color was established with the color parameter of Munsell Value, then two asphalts were adopted to study the influence of asphalt ageing on its surface color, and the mechanism of whitening was investigated by the four generic fractions experiment, color spectrum tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test. The results show that the surface color of asphalt will be changed by some factors, while ageing is an important factor. The thermal-oxidative ageing (TOA) of asphalt would lead to the asphalt to be darker in color due to the component migration caused by ageing, while the ultraviolet ageing (UVA) of asphalt will result in a grey or white asphalt surface because of the fact that UVA makes the surface wrinkled and rough which would cause the asphalt surface to change from specular reflection to diffuse reflection. Since the whitening of asphalt surface caused by UVA is much more serious than the blacking caused by TOA, the asphalt pavement always tends to appear grey or white during its service life. To verify the close relationship between the surface color and UVA degree of asphalt, two modified asphalts with anti-ultraviolet ageing agents, carbon black and layered double hydroxides, were suffered from UVA, and their ageing degrees were assessed with the parameters of Munsell Value and conventional physical properties, results indicate the two evaluations on UVA degree have much consistency, which means it is feasible to adopt Munsell Value, a parameter of asphalt surface color, to evaluate the UV ageing degree of asphalt.
