Influence of Neighboring Vegetation Patches on Flow Structure Characteristics with Different Densities EI CSCD PKU

Abstract :

Vegetation patches constitute the foundational elements of river dynamic systems, often forming communities within channels. This study examines how the interaction between neighboring vegetation patches influences flow structure. A pair of adjacent vegetation patches, constructed from staggered rigid cylinders with varying densities, is used in the experiments. The findings indicate significant differences in flow structure when water traverses these adjacent patches compared to an isolated patch. Hence, a flow structure partition for adjacent patches is proposed, including an upstream adjustment region, a vegetation interior region, a shear layers region, and a wake merger region. The upstream adjustment length indicates the distance upstream from the obstruction where velocity starts to deviate from its far upstream value. This reduction in velocity is pronounced in denser patches, although the upstream adjustment length remains unaffected by vegetation density. The velocity at the centerline of each patch significantly decreases, whereas the velocity between the patches increases rapidly, a characteristic of the vegetation interior region. The reduction in individual patch velocity is again observed in denser patches. In the downstream area, the shear layers region extends from the trailing edge of the patches to the point of minimal velocity behind each isolated patch. With increasing vegetation density, the smallest velocity approaches zero, while the length of the shear layers region, denoted as L1, initially decreases before stabilizing. The highest velocity on the centerline between the patches occurs near the trailing edge, with the lowest velocity observed at a distance (x/D=Lm) from the trailing edge. As vegetation density increases, the maximum velocity on the centerline between the patches rises, but the minimum velocity and Lm decrease. The difference (Lm–L1) defines the length of the wake merger region; here, the centerline velocity of each patch increases and aligns with the velocity on the centerline between the patches, causing the wakes directly behind each patch to merge into a single, larger entity. In addition, the formulas for the exit velocity, steady wake velocity, and minimum centerline velocity of the two patches are presented. © 2024 Sichuan University. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

Abstract :

This study aimed to effectively evaluate the ecological restoration of the river reach where a small hydropower station was retired or renovated. An ecological health index system was constructed based on the environmental characteristics of the upstream and downstream of the small hydropower station after its retirement and renovation. Based on the combination weighting concept of game theory, the combination weights were obtained by the comprehensive analytic hierarchy process (subjective weight) and entropy method (objective weight). This ecological health assessment with fuzzy comprehensive evaluation was applied to assess the health status of Shimen (dam removal) and Changqiao (renovation in ecological flow) reaches of the Tufang River in Changting County, China. The results showed that the ecological health assessment index system proposed in this study was comprehensive and reasonable, and the revision degree of the hydropower station obviously influenced the process of ecological river restoration. The findings from this study would benefit for the rational utilization of water resources and the river ecological health maintenance in mountainous areas.

Analysis of the driving factors of the change of erosion-deposition in the Minjiang Estuary, Southeast China SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Understanding the evolution and driving factors of sedimentation and erosion at the mouths of small and medium-sized mountain streams during various periods is essential for regional spatial utilization, development, and sustainable economic growth. This is particularly important when considering the combined impact of climate change and human activities. This paper presents an analysis of the changes in sedimentation and erosion of mouth isobaths and underwater deltas over different periods using nautical chart data (1950-2019) and analyzes the factors driving changes in sedimentation and erosion during different periods from 1950 to 2020 based on the runoff-sediment discharge of the Minjiang River (MR) and extreme climate factors such as typhoons, especially the driving factors that caused a sudden change in the sedimentation and erosion process between 1998 and 2005. The results indicate that runoff-sediment characteristics are crucial in driving sedimentation and erosion changes. In the past 70 years, the underwater delta of the MRE has mainly experienced four stages: deposition (1950-1992) -erosion (1993-1998) -deposition (1998-2011) -erosion (2011-2019). Taking the impoundment operation of the Shuikou Reservoir in 1993 as the node, the sediment load of the Minjiang River into the sea began to decrease sharply, and then the estuary quickly showed a state of erosion. The change of sediment flux into the sea is the main driving factor for the evolution of erosion and deposition in the Minjiang River Estuary (MRE). The critical value of the erosion-deposition transition is about 570.3 x 104 t/yr. After the estuary entered a state of erosion in 1993-1998, significant siltation suddenly occurred in 1998-2005. The reason for the siltation in this period may be related to the frequent transit typhoons and flood events in 1998-2005. Therefore, the change of river sediment supply into the sea is the main driving factor controlling the erosion and deposition evolution of the Minjiang River estuary on a long time scale of more than 10 years, which reflects the influence of large-scale human activities on the river and estuary area in the past half century. Extreme climate events are the incentive to adjust the estuary landform in the short term. Extreme climate events will not fundamentally change the process of estuarine geomorphological evolution under the background of sediment supply reduction.

Experimental study on the effect of an oyster reef on the nonlinear characteristics of irregular waves SCIE
期刊论文 | 2022 , 9 | FRONTIERS IN MARINE SCIENCE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

As a "marine ecological engineer", the oyster reefs not only perform important ecological functions, but also reduce the damage caused by waves to protective structures such as seawalls. However, oyster reefs in shallow water change the nonlinear characteristics of waves and affect sediment transport and coastal evolution. Based on Fourier spectrum and analysis of Wavelet Transform, the influence of artificial bag oyster reefs on the energy and nonlinear phase coupling of irregular waves are studied through physical experiment. The results show that oyster reefs have a substantial effect on the energy of primary harmonic, which transfer to higher harmonics through triad interactions, and a considerable reduction in primary harmonic energy and an increase in higher harmonics energy are reflected in the energy spectra. The transmission spectrum behind the oyster reefs shows three peaks at primary, secondary and third harmonics. The bicoherence spectrum indicates that the peaks at secondary and third harmonics mainly result from the self-coupling of the primary harmonics and phase coupling between the primary and secondary harmonics respectively. As the water depth increases, the degree of nonlinear coupling between wave components decreases, which leads to the energy of wave components at different frequencies increases. With increasing top width, the length of the shoaling region increases, and the growth of triad nonlinear interactions are observed in wavelet-based bicoherence spectra, resulting in the spectral peak energy decreasing while the secondary harmonics energy increasing in the spectrum. Finally, the potential application of an ecological system composed by "oyster reefs + mangroves" is discussed. As the effect of water depth on wave energy is much greater than that of top width, in artificial oyster reef construction, it is recommended that keep the oyster reefs non-submerged in terms of wave dissipation. Further studies should take the dynamic growth effect of oyster reefs into account.

Development of an Integrated Water Resource Scheduling Model Based on Platform Plug-In: A Case Study of the Wudu Diversion and Irrigation Area, China SCIE

Abstract :

Integrated water resource scheduling is a key strategy for controlling river floods as well as for promoting the benefits and abolishing the harmful aspects of water conservancy projects. It is necessary to explore an effective development mode to address the current issues of long development times and poor outcomes for integrated water resource scheduling models. Drawing on the concept of software reuse, a development mode for an integrated water resource scheduling model is offered based on "platform system + model plug-in", the cores of which are plug-in modules and interface integration. The boundaries and connection relations of each plug-in module are formed based on the logical analysis of the model plug-in. A web application mode is used to implement a standardized interface, which can be quickly and seamlessly connected to the system platform. The model is explored and applied in the Wudu diversion and irrigation area in China. The generated model is eventually verified using data obtained from two flood periods. According to the simulation results, the gate operation will be convenient, and the target water level will be attained in the allocated time with a satisfactory peak-clipping effect. It shows both good coordination and great utilization value of the plug-in modules. The concept of designing a plug-in database is eventually taken into consideration for combining and generating an optimization model of each river.

Abstract :

Abstract: Three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum technology (EEMs) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) were applied to study the space-time distribution characteristics and sources of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water of Cihu Lake, in order to provide references for the treatment of urban eutrophic lakes. The results show that in Cihu Lake, DOM mainly consisted of terrestrial humic-like component C1 (340/430 nm), unknown humic-like component C2 (390/480 nm), protein-like component C3 (290/350 nm) and the self-generated tryptophan component C4 (280/330 nm). Among them, C1 was the largest contribution to DOM of Cihu Lake, and C4 was the smallest. There were temporal and spatial differences between the four components of the Cihu Lake. The maximum fluorescence value (Fmax) of each component was higher in summer and autumn, lower in winter and spring. The most obvious component was C1, followed by C3. In terms of spatial distribution, the Fmax value was higher in the area which was close to residential areas, and component C1 changed most obviously. (3) The components of DOM in Cihu Lake was mainly derived from different kinds of humus, followed by endogenous protein-like substances degraded by microorganisms. (4) There was a significant positive correlation between components C1, C2 and C3 in Cihu Lake, which indicate that they had homology. (5) It showed a strong positive correlation with Chl-a conceatration in the absorption coefficient of a350, which indicate that the fluorescence absorption property of DOM was closely related to phytoplankton. © 2020, China Environmental Science Press.
