Abstract :
OBJECTIVE: Multiple intracranial aneurysms (MIA) are prevalent. This study conducted hemodynamic calculations on MIA to analyze the effects of occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms on the hemodynamics of other arteries, as well as the issue of the treatment order for these aneurysms. METHODS: The models of 9 patients with MIA were selected for the study. A computational fluid dynamics model combining 1-dimension and 3-dimension was used to obtain the vascular flow pattern and wall pressure. RESULTS: There was increased pressure at the MCA and anterior cerebral artery (ACA) after occlusion of the aneurysm at the ICA. However, the pressure at the ICA has hardly changed after the aneurysm occlusion at the MCA. Occlusion of the aneurysm of different sizes at the MCA had almost no impact on the pressure at the ICA and ACA. For small aneurysm, the pressure of the ACA and MCA increases with decreasing size of the aneurysm at the ICA. After occlusion of a large aneurysm at the ICA, the impact on the pressure of the ACA and MCA is almost the same as after occlusion of a medium-sized aneurysm. CONCLUSIONS: If the treatment order of ICA and MCA aneurysms cannot be determined based on patient factors and aneurysm characteristics, the MCA aneurysm should be treated as a priority.

Abstract :
Clinically, circle of Willis (CoW) is prone to anomaly and is also the predominant incidence site of intracranial aneurysms (IAs). This study aims to investigate the hemodynamic characteristics of CoW anomaly, and ascertain the mechanism of IAs initiation from the perspective of hemodynamics. Thus, the flow of IAs and pre-IAs were analyzed for one type of cerebral artery anomaly, that is, anterior cerebral artery A1 segment (ACA-A1) unilateral absence. Three patient geometrical models with IAs were selected from Emory University Open Source Data Center. IAs were virtually removed from the geometrical models to simulate the pre-IAs geometry. For calculation methods, a one-dimensional (1-D) solver and a three-dimensional (3-D) solver were combined to obtain the hemodynamic characteristics. The numerical simulation revealed that the average flow of Anterior Communicating Artery (ACoA) is almost zero when CoW is complete. In contrast, ACoA flow increases significantly in the case of ACA-A1 unilateral absence. For per-IAs geometry, the jet flow is found at the bifurcation between contralateral ACA-A1 and ACoA, which exhibits characteristics of high Wall Shear Stress (WSS) and high wall pressure in the impact region. It triggers the initiation of IAs from the perspective of hemodynamics. The vascular anomaly that leads to jet flow should be considered as a risk factor for IAs initiation.

Abstract :
Considering the wear in mechanical bearings and the requirement for sensors or electrical power in active magnetic bearings, a novel nutation blood pump using a passive magnetic spherical bearing was developed in this paper. A mathematical model was derived to calculate the magnetic forces of the bearing between two pairs of magnetic sleeves in the nutation process. The calculation results demonstrate that the fluctuations of magnetic forces enlarge with the increase in the nutation angle; the magnetic forces obviously increase with the decrease in the air gap, especially along the z-axis. The dynamic magnetic finite element simulation was carried out to validate the mathematical model. The simulation and calculation results of the magnetic forces show consistent trends and provide a theoretical basis for the parameter design. To validate the performance of the pump, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses and in vitro experiments were conducted. The predicted values of the flow velocity vector through the pump, and the wall shear stress, demonstrate that the pump has an antithrombotic property and would not cause serious blood damage. The hydraulic experiment shows that a pressure rise can be achieved in the range of 60140 mmHg, at a rotational speed of 6001600 rpm and a flow rate of 0.46.7 L/min. The normalized index of hemolysis (NIH) of the nutation pump was 0.0043 0.0008 g/100L. The in vitro tests indicate the feasibility of a magnetically levitated ventricular-assist nutation blood pump for further suspension stability and animal trials.

Abstract :
The effect of sample tilt in spherical indentation is studied by recourse to three-dimensional finite element simulation of the loading process. An elastic solid subjected to a rigid spherical indenter is considered under either frictionless or infinitely frictional contact condition. It is found the contact boundary is not parallel with the tilted surface, and the tilt angle of the contact boundary is smaller than the sample tilt angle. The side force is prominent for frictionless contact, and the ratio of side force to normal force increases with the sample tilt angle because of a larger unbalanced displacement field. Nevertheless, the ratio of side force to normal force is relatively small for infinitely frictional contact because the displacement distribution is controlled by the nonslip condition and almost balanced irrespective of sample tilt.

Abstract :
The ventricle assist device has emerged as an important therapeutic option in the treatment of both acute and chronic heart failure. The blood pumps, the major components of ventricle assist devices, have also progressed to the third generation. The magnetic levitation technologies have been applied into the third generation blood pumps. This paper proposes a novel miniscule maglev nutation pump with Magnetic bearing based on nutation principle. The calculation formula of magnetic force is established on the basis of the research for the operational principle of the magnetic bearing. Through establishing and solving the equations, the structural dimension and magnetization intensity of the magnetic bearing are obtained. Then, the three-dimensional model of the nutation pump is established. Furthermore, the structure design, manufacturing and assembling of the pump is completed. Finally, the simulation of the maglev nutation pump is carried out. And the effectiveness of the miniscule maglev nutation pump is verified.
