Abstract :
Two-dimensional (2D) chirality-induced asymmetric transmission/reflection has great potential for polarization applications. Usually, asymmetric effects resulting from circular conversion dichroism (CCD) occur in chiral metasurfaces. Here, we propose a single-layer twisted graphene-patterned (with tilted elliptical hole arrays) metasurface and theoretically reveal its tunable CCD in the terahertz (THz) region. The unit cell of the metasurface is achiral. Merely by altering the in-plane orientation of holes for structural 2D chirality, a tunable CCD can be achieved at normal incidence. Interestingly, the reflection phase can be consid-ered an intuitive method to show this metasurface's anisotropy, which complements the conventional CCD measurement in characterizing chiral materials. Furthermore, we can achieve active CCD based on the tunability of graphene. Due to the Fabry-Perot resonance, a multiband enhancement of CCD spectrum will happen by changing the dielectric layer thickness. The proposed metasurface provides more flexible opportunities for designing active THz devices for polarization manipulation.

Abstract :
To enhance the strength of chiral light-matter interaction for practical applications, the chirality and quality factors (Q-factors) of current methods need to be strengthened simultaneously. Here, we propose a design of photonic crystal slabs (PhCs) supporting chiral bound states in the continuum (BICs) of transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, exhibiting maximal chiroptical responses with high Q-factors and near-unity circular dichroism (CD = 0.98). Different from the past, the PhCs we employed only have reduced in-plane symmetry and can support simultaneously chiral quasi-BICs (q-BICs) of TE and TM mode with two-dimensional ultra-strong external and internal chirality. Based on the temporal coupled-mode theory, two analytical expressions of CD of chiral q-BICs response are revealed, which are consistent with the simulation results. Furthermore, we elucidate these results within the charge-current multipole expansion framework and demonstrate that the co-excitation of higher-order multipole electric/magnetic modes is responsible for near-perfect CD. Our results may provide more flexible opportunities for various applications requiring high Q-factors and chirality control, such as chiral lasing, chiral sensing, and enantiomer separation. Abstract :
In this work, we proposed a black phosphorus (BP) achiral metasurface and theoretically study the chiroptical response arising from extrinsic 2D-chirality in the mid-infrared regime. The achiral metasurface is composed of a monolayer BP sheet sandwiched by a silver ring array and dielectric spacer stacking on a silver substrate. The giant circular conversion dichroism (CCD) of the achiral metasurface is allowed at oblique incidence for the cooperative interaction of BP anisotropic surface plasmon modes and localized surface plasmons in metal rings, and the integrated BP can dynamically modulate the chiroptical response by controlling the doping concentration of BP. Furthermore, we found that a multiband phenomenon for CCD response occurs when tuning the thickness of the spacer. The proposed hybrid achiral metasurface provides more flexible opportunities to realize active polarization modulator, biosensor and chiral detection. Abstract :
Multifrequency superscattering is a phenomenon in which the scattering cross section from a subwavelength object simultaneously exceeds the single-channel limit at multiple frequency regimes. Here, we achieve simultaneously, within a graphene-coated subwavelength structure, multifrequency superscattering and superscattering shaping with different engineered scattering patterns. It is shown that multimode degenerate resonances at multiple frequency regimes appearing in a graphene composite structure due to the peculiar dispersion can be employed to resonantly overlap electric and magnetic multipoles of various orders, and, as a result, effective multifrequency superscattering with different engineered angular patterns can be obtained. Moreover, the phenomena of multifrequency superscattering have a high tolerance to material losses and some structural variations. Our work should anticipate extensive applications ranging from emission enhancing, energy harvesting, and antenna design with improved sensitivity and accuracy due to multifrequency operation.

Abstract :
Topological one-way edge states promise robust information transport through the notion of photonic crystals. For further applications of edge-state circuits and devices, a high gap Chern number, C-g, is required. Contrary to previous realizations using gyrotropic photonic crystals, we show how vertical bar C-g vertical bar > 1 can be obtained by gapping multiple Dirac cones, which can surprisingly occur in a reciprocal continuous medium with limited degrees of freedom. A maximum of four one-way edge states is allowed on a single interface between two reciprocal continuous media. One-way signal combiners and splitters are designed with exact control on the branching and transmission efficiencies as immediate applications. Our theoretical investigations will be useful for constructing edge-state devices with multiplexing and demultiplexing capability.

Abstract :
We have found that strong superchiral fields created by surface plasmon resonance exist in hot spots of nonchiral plasmonic structure, which showed a chiral density greater than that of circularly polarized light by hundreds of times. We have demonstrated a direct correlation between the strong chirality of the local field and the giant CD response at the plasmon resonance bands induced by chiral molecules in the hot spots. Our results reveal that the wavelengthdependent superchiral fields in the hot spots can play a crucial role in the determination of the plasmonic CD effect. This finding is in contrast to the currently accepted physical model in which the electromagnetic field intensity in hot spots is a key factor to determine the peak intensity of the plasmonic CD spectrum. Some related experimental phenomena have been explained by using our theoretical analysis. © OSA 2016.
