Abstract :
Absorption carbon capture is currently the most commercialized technology and deemed as the vital solution to balance continued use of fossil fuels and carbon emission reduction. Nevertheless, its high energy cost remains the major concern for wide-scale application. Consequently, it is of great significance to address this issue by analyzing the underlying energy conversion mechanism, answering the pivotal question 'What characteristics lead to a superior absorbent?', and developing more efficient absorbent. In this paper, an irreversible decoupling model of absorption carbon capture system, consisting of a heat engine and a chemical pump, is innovatively established. Accordingly, key performance indicators are analytically derived and the optimal operation strategies of the system are explicitly determined. Notably, the matching of two subsystems leads to a novel insight into the heat and mass transfer interaction of absorbent, according to which the simulated results and the question concerning the best absorbent are thermodynamically interpreted and addressed, respectively. Additionally, the comparisons between the calculated optimal energy conversion efficiencies with experimental and simulated results are presented and discussed. Our findings may indicate the efficient pathway for developing advanced absorbent and provide instructing information for the design and operation of practical carbon capture systems. © 2024

Abstract :
Despite a large number of studies on collective motion, individuals are usually assumed to participate in flocking unconditionally, and the cost of communication with other in-dividuals is rarely considered . In fact, individuals often need to face a dichotomous sce-nario: choosing to move together with others and pay the communication cost, or choos-ing to walk alone and have no communication cost. In this paper, a modified Vicsek model is proposed, in which agents have different kinds of moving patterns depending on the strategies taken by them. Each individual obtains a payoff based on the benefit of the col-lective motion and the cost of communication with neighbors. Individuals update their strategies according to the evolutionary game theory. It is found that not only cooperation can be maintained, but also the highest synchronization level can be achieved at an op-timal value of communication radius. The influence of other pertinent quantities such as the random noise, the relative cost, and the density of agents have also been investigated in detail.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract :
Results show that the astrocytes can not only listen to the talk of large assemble of neurons but also give advice to the conversations and are significant sources of heterogeneous couplings as well. In the present work, we focus on such regulation character of astrocytes and explore the role of heterogeneous couplings among interacted neuron-astrocyte components in a signal response. We consider reduced dynamics in which the listening and advising processes of astrocytes are mapped into the form of group coupling, where the couplings are normally distributed. In both globally coupled overdamped bistable oscillators and an excitable FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) neuron model, we numerically and analytically demonstrate that two types of bell-shaped collective response curves can be obtained as the ensemble coupling strength or the heterogeneity of group coupling rise, respectively, which can be seen as a new type of double resonance. Furthermore, through the bifurcation analysis, we verify that these resonant signal responses stem from the competition between dispersion and aggregation induced by heterogeneous group and positive pairwise couplings, respectively. Our results contribute to a better understanding of the signal propagation in coupled systems with quenched disorder.

Abstract :
Heat transformers, also referred to as temperature boosters, draw considerable attention for the great potential in exploiting low-grade thermal energy. In this paper, a generic model of three-terminal heat transformer without reference to any specific heat-transfer law is established on the basis of the low-dissipation assumption. Accordingly, the optimum behaviors and parametric choices under two different parameter constraints are investigated and compared. Notably, the connection between overall time constraint and the presence of external heat leak for the three-terminal heat transformer is revealed. In addition, the Omega function based on the trade -off consideration is introduced to provide more practical evaluations. The performances of the three-terminal heat transformer operated at maximum Omega regime are derived and found to be less powerful but more efficient comparing with the associated maximum heating load regime. Moreover, the influences of dissipation symmetry on several key performance indicators are elaborated by using numerical calculation, which leads to the important results of the present paper, namely the performance bounds of coefficient of performance (COP) at maximum heating load and maximum Omega regimes. Finally, the reported COPs from previous researches are collected to illustrate the validity and practical significance of the proposed model and associated perfor-mance bounds.

Abstract :
The extraordinary thermal-to-electricity conversion efficiency of thermally regenerative electrochemical cycle triggers interest in its reverse counterpart, namely thermally regenerative electrochemical refrigerator (TRER), a promising alternative to conventional cooling devices. Nevertheless, due to three fundamental obstacles, the practically feasible TRER model is still absent, which hinders the development of follow-up research. To break this bottleneck, heating by discharging and cooling by charging effects are innovatively utilized to construct TRER models where the electrochemical counterparts of traditional adiabatic compression and expansion processes, namely adiabatic pre-charging and pre-discharging processes, are proposed and introduced. Significantly, the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) and the COP at maximum cooling power are predicted to achieve up to 40% and 5% of Carnot COP, respectively for the given values of parameters. Moreover, the great potential for efficient refrigeration is highlighted by comparing the obtained results with various refrigeration systems. This work lays the foundation for further experimental investigations and opens a new avenue for constructing other novel electrochemical cycles.

Abstract :
A moderate degree of diversity, in form of quenched noise or intrinsic heterogeneity, can significantly strengthen the collective response of coupled extended systems. As yet, related discoveries on diversity-induced resonance are mainly concentrated on symmetrically distributed heterogeneity, e.g., the Gaussian or uniform distributions with zero-mean. The necessary conditions that guarantee the arise of resonance phenomenon in heterogeneous oscillators remain largely unknown. In this work, we show that the standard deviation and the ratio of negative entities of a given distribution jointly modulate diversity-induced resonance and the concomitance of negative and positive entities is the prerequisite for this resonant behavior emerging in diverse symmetrical and asymmetrical distributions. Particularly, for a proper degree of diversity of a given distribution, the collective signal response behaves like a bell-shaped curve as the ratio of negative oscillator increases, which can be termed negative-oscillator-ratio induced resonance. Furthermore, we analytically reveal that the ratio of negative oscillators plays a gating role in the resonance phenomenon on the basis of a reduced equation. Finally, we examine the robustness of these results in globally coupled bistable elements with asymmetrical potential functions. Our results suggest that the phenomenon of diversity-induced resonance can arise in arbitrarily distributed heterogeneous bistable oscillators by regulating the ratio of negative entities appropriately. Abstract :
In the present paper, a general non-combined model of three-terminal refrigerator beyond specific heat transfer mechanisms is established based on the low-dissipation assumption. The relation between the optimized cooling power and the corresponding coefficient of performance (COP) is analytically derived, according to which the COP at maximum cooling power (CMP) can be further determined. At two dissipation asymmetry limits, upper and lower bounds of CMP are obtained and found to be in good agreement with experimental and simulated results. Additionally, comparison of the obtained bounds with previous combined model is presented. In particular it is found that the upper bounds are the same, whereas the lower bounds are quite different. This feature indicates that the claimed universal equivalence for the combined and non-combined models under endoreversible assumption is invalid within the frame of low-dissipation assumption. Then, the equivalence between various finite-time thermodynamic models needs to be reevaluated regarding multi-terminal systems. Moreover, the correlation between the combined and non-combined models is further revealed by the derivation of the equivalent condition according to which the identical upper bounds and distinct lower bounds are theoretically shown. Finally, the proposed non-combined model is proved to be the appropriate model for describing various types of thermally driven refrigerator. This work may provide some instructive information for the further establishments and performance analyses of multi-terminal low-dissipation models.

Abstract :
Education is not only a guarantee of personal knowledge, but also a topic of national importance. In this paper, we analyzed the scientific papers published by authors from China and the United States in 239 educational journals over a period of 20 years (2000-2019). We first extracted the topic of each paper via the Latent Dirichlet allocation model, which demonstrated significant differences in specific sub-fields between both countries. Next, we constructed two networks of scientific collaboration among the educators of each country. By analyzing these networks' topological properties, we show both countries' differences and common features. Regarding individuals, Chinese educators collaborate widely, whereas American educators are more likely to collaborate in certain groups. Regarding groups, there exists an optimal team size for producing highly popular papers in both countries. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract :
It has recently been shown that in one-dimensional hard-point gases, there is a mechanism that induces negative differential thermal resistance (NDTR) between heat baths. We examine this mechanism in more general higher-dimensional fluids described by multiparticle collision dynamics. We consider fluids in a finite cuboid region of three-dimensional space with each end in contact with a heat bath. Based on analytical results and numerical models, we find that the mechanism underlying NDTR also works for high-dimensional fluidic systems with weak interactions and is very robust to mixed fluids. Our results significantly advance knowledge of NDTR induced by heat baths and illuminate different directions to explore in fabricating fluid thermal transistors in micro- and nanosystems. © 2022 authors. Abstract :
Opinion dynamics on social networks have received considerable attentions in recent years. Nevertheless, just a few works have theoretically analyzed the condition in which a certain opinion can spread in the whole structured population. In this article, we propose an evolutionary game approach for a binary opinion model to explore the conditions for an opinion's spreading. Inspired by real-life observations, we assume that an agent's choice to select an opinion is not random but is based on a score rooted from both public knowledge and the interactions with neighbors. By means of coalescing random walks, we obtain a condition in which opinion A can be favored to spread on social networks in the weak selection limit. We find that the successfully spreading condition of opinion A is closely related to the basic scores of binary opinions, the feedback scores on opinion interactions, and the structural parameters including the edge weights, the weighted degrees of vertices, and the average degree of the network. In particular, when individuals adjust their opinions based solely on the public information, the vitality of opinion A depends exclusively on the difference of basic scores of A and B. When there are no negative (positive) feedback interactions between connected individuals, we find that the success of opinion A depends on the ratio of the obtained positive (negative) feedback scores of competing opinions. To complete our study, we perform computer simulations on fully connected, small-world, and scale-free networks, respectively, which support and confirm our theoretical findings.
