A Dual-Polarized Wideband Phased Array With Enhanced Low-Scattering Characteristics Enabled by Unbalanced Coupling Structures SCIE

Abstract :

An X-band dual-polarized phased array with in-band co-polarization low-scattering property is presented. Unlike previous works, the relationship between mutual coupling and in-band scattering is investigated, identifying that the coupling structure is one of the primary contributors to residual mode scattering. Taking advantage of this feature, the bridge circuit topology is employed to analyze the effects of unbalanced adjustments for the coupling structure, revealing that these adjustments will lead to polarization conversion of the scattered field from co-polarized to cross-polarized form. Subsequently, a p-i-n diode-based central branch with interpolarization coupling current control ability is introduced for the real-time control of the trade-off between scattering and radiation performance. As a result, a dual-polarized element and its mirror element co-designed with controllable scattering polarization conversion ability are proposed, enabling residual mode scattering cancellation when arrayed together. As a demonstration, a prototype is fabricated and measured, which is capable of operating from 7.6 to 12 GHz with a radiation beam scanning up to +/- 60 degrees in E-/H-plane. The achieved in-band co-polarized monostatic radar cross section reduction (RCSR) averages 16.5 and 21.4 dB for H-/V-polarized incidence, respectively. The measured results align well with the simulation results, thus confirming the good performance of the proposed array.

Abstract :

Large curvature conformal design and radar cross section (RCS) reduction have long been unresolved challenges for ultrawideband (UWB) arrays. In this work, a novel type of dual-polarized UWB leading edge conformal tightly coupled dipole array (LEC-TCDA) with low-scattering characteristics is proposed for the wings of aircraft platforms. Based on the scattering-matrix approach, a rapid design process for transforming planar TCDA elements into conformal counterparts is proposed, effectively compensating the reduction in gain caused by the curvature of the radiation aperture. Moreover, to reduce the RCS of the antenna, a broadband flexible resistive indium tin oxide (ITO) absorber based on a deformed octagonal ring is designed and employed as a cover layer for controlling the higher frequency out-of-band RCS. A 10x 1 array prototype is fabricated with the standard PCB technology, resin 3-D printing technology, and metal 3-D printing technology. Measurement results show that the proposed array achieves a 0.5-2-GHz (4:1) impedance bandwidth while scanning up to +/- 45 degrees in the horizontal plane for both polarizations. Remarkably, a measured average RCS reduction (RCSR) of 41.72 and 35.12 dB for H/V-polarization incidence throughout 6-18 GHz is observed. With its excellent radiation and scattering performances, the proposed array underscores the unparalleled advantages of large curvature conformal arrays in the design of low RCS arrays.

Abstract :

拓扑优化方法因其高自由度特点在器件智能设计领域发挥重要作用,在微波工程课程中引入器件拓扑优化实验可提升课程前沿性.该实验通过天线匹配网络拓扑优化提高天线的辐射性能:首先采用阻抗矩阵方法对天线匹配网络的响应进行理论建模,随后利用遗传算法对网络进行拓扑优化,实现天线工作频带的智能按需设计.结果表明,经过拓扑优化的微波天线可在指定的频带内实现良好的阻抗匹配,达到95%以上的最大天线效率.该实验展示了基于阻抗矩阵理论的微波网络拓扑优化方法,为微波与天线相关课程提供了一项具备综合性、前沿性的课题训练项目.

Abstract :

This article presents a visualized approach to efficiently designing an antenna decoupling network constructed by cascaded coupled transmission lines (CTLs). The cascaded CTL architecture is explored to decouple tightly-packed antenna pairs with extremely small feed point spacing, circumventing the narrow bandwidth and loss issues associated with resonant decoupling structures. To facilitate the fast CTL design, we propose to analytically map the CTLs' odd-mode (OM) and even-mode (EM) characteristic impedances onto the Smith charts of the antenna's OM and EM input impedances. By leveraging this approach, the required CTL's OM and EM parameters for antenna decoupling can be directly determined without relying on intricate optimization or try-and-error process. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology, a printed monopole antenna pair with an element center-to-center spacing of merely 0.1.0 (at 3.5 GHz) is prototyped, which exhibits a 15-dB isolation bandwidth of 18% and a total efficiency exceeding 85% over this bandwidth. The proposed decoupling approach substantially simplifies the design of compact high-isolation antenna pairs which would have important applications in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems.
