Abstract :

The architectural design and fabrication of low-cost, high-performance organic scintillators are critical for medical imaging and material/device analysis. However, achieving large-area and high-transparency organic scintillators in a low-cost and easy-to-implement method remains a challenge. Herein, a new design strategy for regulating the side chain length of maleimide derivatives is demonstrated to develop organic scintillators for achieving low-cost, large-area, and high spatial resolution in X-ray imaging. The effective intermolecular interactions and relatively twisted molecular structure endow PAM-M4 molecule with outstanding scintillator properties. More importantly, as demonstrated for the first time, pure organic glassy films with a diameter over 10 cm and high optical transparency can be prepared by the developed melt-quenched method using PAM-M4 crystal powder as a raw material. This glassy film exhibits excellent X-ray imaging ability with a spatial resolution as high as 27.0 lp mm-1 at MTF = 0.20, which is one of the best results among reported organic scintillators. The results of this work not only develop a new design strategy for high-performance organic scintillators but also demonstrate a reliable approach to fabricating large area screens with superior spatial resolution for medical or industrial X-ray imaging applications. A maleimide-based scintillator can be easily synthesized and exhibits a fast scintillation decay time of 12.38 ns, a high PLQY of 87.6%, and a low detection limit of 0.14 mu Gy s-1. By using the melt-quenched method, PAM-M4 crystal can turn into a large-area glassy film. This glassy film exhibits a transmittance of over 90%, along with a resolution of 27.0 lp mm-1 for X-ray imaging, which represents the state-of-the-art performance for organic scintillators. image

Adaptive maleimide-fused macrocyclic clamps: Synthesis, structures, and complexations with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The photoactive macrocyclic molecules attract attention because of their important roles in supramolecular chemistry as well as photoelectronic applications. Herein, two D-A conjugated macrocycles containing two maleimide nodes have been successfully obtained via an one-pot cascade reaction of Perkin and imidization condensations. Owing to the incorporation of two bulky 1,4-dimethoxybenzene moieties at the narrow maleimide corners, the obtained conjugated macrocycles have been equipped with two adaptive clamps, which can adjust to the guest sizes to capture the guest molecules. Interestingly, the co-crystallization with larger-sized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) leads to the 1:1 host-guest complexes, while with smaller-sized solvents results in the 1:2 complexes. Furthermore, the rotatable 1,4-dimethoxybenzene moieties endowed such macrocyclic fluorophores with pronounced solvatochromic and aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) phenomena.

Highly Efficient, Low-Dose, and Ultrafast Carbazole X-Ray Scintillators SCIE

Abstract :

Organic fluorescence scintillators, owing to the ultrafast response time, versatile chemical structures, low processing temperature, and low cost, are considered as one of the promising materials for medical diagnostics, radiation detection, and X-ray astronomy. However, the low radioluminescence (RL) intensity and low sensitivity hinder their practical applications. In this work, a highly efficient organic fluorescent scintillator, 4,4 '-bis(9-carbazolyl)biphenyl (CBP), is presented, exhibiting a high X-ray RL intensity, narrow full width at half-maximum of 49 nm, and ultrafast decay time of 1.15 ns. More importantly, it has a low detection limit of 25.5 nGy s(-1), which is only 1/215 dose rate compared with the commercial X-ray diagnostics. Such an excellent scintillation performance is mainly attributed to its high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY = 61.92%) and good carrier transport (average hole mobility of 0.094 cm(2) V-1 s(-1)). By mixing the CBP into polydimethylsiloxane, the fabricated large area flexible film can be applied in X-ray radiography, which exhibits a high spatial resolution of 14.3 lp mm(-1) at MTF > 0.2. This work paves a way for the implementation of organic fluorescence dyes with high PLQY, high carrier mobility in efficient X-ray scintillation and imaging.

Photochromism and electrochromism in pyridinium-annelated perylene diimide salts via charge-assisted anion-π interactions SCIE

Abstract :

Organic chromic materials with photochromic and electrochromic properties are promising materials for photoelectric applications. Despite some reports indicating the presence of these properties in aromatic imide derivatives, the advancement of their enduring discoloration performance remains an unresolved challenge. Herein, we incorporated of charge-assisted anion-pi interactions into aromatic imide derivatives as a strategy for improving the stability of generated free-radical, and a series of pyridinium-annelated perylene diimides salts (PAPDI-X, X = I-, Br-, Cl-, NO3-, PF6-) were synthesized. With variations in the electron-donating capabilities (Lewis basicity) of the anions, the nature of anion-PDI interactions undergoes a transition from non-chromogenic anion-pi interaction to chromogenic anion-induced electron transfer (ET) phenomenon, and these interactions have been fully characterized by UV/Vis, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies. Among the evaluated anions, Br- anion with moderate Lewis basicity participates in ET with PAPDI by light or voltage stimuli, and generate stable PAPDI-Br center dot- radical anion and PAPDI-Br2- dianion in aprotic solvent or in solid state, thus making PAPDI-Br exhibit distinctive photo/electrochromic dual responsive behavior based on radical formation. This meaningful design provides new concepts for the design of organic chromic materials and shows great prospects in optoelectrical materials.

Abstract :

In this study, four novel aromatic polyimides (PIs) with twisted backbone and bulky side substituents were prepared via chemical imidization reaction and two-step condensation polymerization at reduced reaction temperature. The number-average and weight-average molecular weights of the resulting PIs are in the range of 1.98 x 104-4.10 x 104 and 2.66 x 104-5.32 x 104 g mol-1, respectively, while maintaining polydispersity indices consistently below 2.0. In addition, the obtained PIs showed excellent solubility in most common solvents, even in low-boiling solvents, such as chloroform, dichloromethane, and tetrahydrofuran. The films casted from these PIs also displayed optical transparency with a cutoff wavelength in the range of 335-360 nm. Among the PIs, PAPOT-OPDA, derived from 3,3 '-Diisopropyl-4,4 '-diaminodiphenyl-3 ''-phenoxybenzylmethane (PAPOT) and 3,3 ',4,4 '-diphenylethertetracarboxylic dianhydride (OPDA), exhibited the highest transparency of T450 = 81% and T500 = 85%, and the best solubility without compromising its thermal properties. image

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Synaptic devices that mimic biological synapses are considered as promising candidates for brain-inspired devices, offering the functionalities in neuromorphic computing. However, modulation of emerging optoelectronic synaptic devices has rarely been reported. Herein, a semiconductive ternary hybrid heterostructure is prepared with a D-D'-A configuration by introducing polyoxometalate (POM) as an additional electroactive donor (D') into a metalloviologen-based D-A framework. The obtained material features an unprecedented porous 8-connected bcu-net that accommodates nanoscale [& alpha;-SiW12O40](4-) counterions, displaying uncommon optoelectronic responses. Besides, the fabricated synaptic device based on this material can achieve dual-modulation of synaptic plasticity due to the synergetic effect of electron reservoir POM and photoinduced electron transfer. And it can successfully simulate learning and memory processes similar to those in biological systems. The result provides a facile and effective strategy to customize multi-modality artificial synapses in the field of crystal engineering, which opens a new direction for developing high-performance neuromorphic devices.
