Reliability-based conformity control method for chloride diffusivity of coastal reinforced concrete buildings SCIE

Abstract :

Chloride diffusivity significantly affects the durability of coastal reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, and is one of the major concerns in practice. However, its design and conformity control are commonly based on "deem-to-satisfy" methodology, and consequently it's difficult to evaluate the building's durability performance. In this paper, a reliability-based conformity control method for diffusivity is proposed to eliminate the gap. First, the existing empirical method and semiempirical method are reviewed, and their drawbacks are addressed according to the reliability assessment. Then, based on the statistical acceptance sampling theory and the engineering practice of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau sea-link project, the reliability-based method for diffusivity is proposed, which can be applied in the construction of coastal RC buildings. In this method, effects of local environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and humidity) on chloride diffusivity are considered, and the relation between diffusion coefficient for design (Da0) and for conformity control (Dnssm) is suggested accordingly. Finally, the conformity control for the concrete's chloride diffusivity of an accessory RC building in the Shantou Harbor is taken as the example, and the schemes by empirical method, semi-empirical method and reliability-based method respectively are established. Their acceptable quality level (AQL) and limiting quality level (LQL), probabilities of acceptance and outcomes in terms of durability reliability are evaluated and compared. It is found that the reliability-based method can offer the schemes that is consistent with the design target, and reject most of the nonconforming lots without harming the producers' benefits.

Abstract :

海洋环境钢结构的锈蚀是导致其在长期服役过程中承载能力下降的重要因素。已有的仿真分析通常采用均匀削减截面厚度的方法来近似代替锈蚀的效果;但由于锈蚀演化往往是非均匀的,且具有随机性,该近似方法往往难以准确评估锈蚀钢构件的承载能力。鉴于此,本文引入随机场模拟方法,以模拟钢构件随机的非均匀锈蚀行为,并以考虑初始缺陷的轴心受压圆钢管为例,开展长期服役钢构件的表观非均匀锈蚀演化模拟、承载能力退化的数值仿真以及其时变可靠度分析研究。本文建立的分析方法,将为海洋钢结构的锈蚀演化及力学性能预测和分析提供更多信息,从而有助于开展其耐久性设计和运维。

Abstract :

Corrosion-induced deterioration of the in-service marine reinforced concrete (RC) structures may result in unsatisfactory serviceability or insufficient safety. Surface deterioration analysis based on random fields can provide information regarding the future development of the surface damage of the in-service RC members, but its accuracy needs to be verified in order to broaden its applications in durability assessment. This paper performs an empirical study to verify the accuracy of the surface deterioration analysis based on random fields. The batch-casting effect is considered to establish the "step-shaped" random fields for stochastic parameters in order to better coordinate their actual spatial distributions. Inspection data from a 23-year-old high-pile wharf is obtained and analyzed in this study. The simulation results of the RC panel members' surface deterioration are compared with the in-situ inspection results with respect to the steel cross-section loss, cracking proportion, maximum crack width, and surface damage grades. It shows that the simulation results coordinate well with the inspection results. On this basis, four maintenance options are established and compared in terms of the total amounts of RC panel members needing restoration and the total economic costs. It provides a comparative tool to aid the owners in selecting the optimal maintenance action given the inspection results, to minimize the lifecycle cost and guarantee the sufficient serviceability and safety of the structures.

Abstract :

For marine reinforced concrete (RC) structures under chloride-attack, the risks of member surface damage can be evaluated using random field analysis method, considering the spatial variations of durability parameters. However, the random field analysis method requires high computational cost and advanced skills, and is not feasible for engineering practice. Recognizing this difficulty, a simplified method is proposed in this paper based on the statistical characteristics of time to corrosion initiation and surface damage. The new method establishes the mappings between the probabilities of member surface damage and the probability (or reliability index) of corrosion initiation at the same age. Thus, engineers and decision-makers can estimate the risk of surface damage through reliability index of corrosion initiation, with the latter can be obtained relatively easily. Probabilistic analysis for the durability performance of a RC slab serviced in marine environment is performed to demonstrate the method. The accuracy of the proposed method is examined through the comparison with the random field simulation method and experimental results in literature.
