Electrochemical Continuous-Flow Scholl Reaction toward Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons SCIE

Abstract :

The preparation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by the Scholl reaction is typically performed by using superstoichiometric oxidants. Herein, we develop an electrochemical continuous-flow Scholl reaction to access PAHs that features a reduction in the use of supporting electrolytes and easy scale-up without changing the reaction conditions and setups. This reaction allows the synthesis of distorted PAHs containing three [5]helicene units that possess intriguing electronic and optical properties.

Abstract :

An electrochemical intramolecular 5-exo-dig aza-cyclization of 2-alkynylbenzamides and subsequent nucleophilic fluorination have been developed to afford the highly selective synthesis of mono- and trifluorinated isoindolin-1-one derivatives. This work demonstrates the unique capability of synthetic electrochemistry in controlling reaction selectivity through the applied electrolytic parameters. In addition, the obtained monofluorinated 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-one (19) displays interesting photophysical properties that are not observed in its nonfluorinated analog.

Abstract :

A series of sila-annulated phenanthrene imides were synthesized through a three-step synthetic route, which represent a hybrid class of biphenyl-based pi-conjugated molecules incorporating an imide unit and silole. A comprehensive investigation of their structural, photophysical, and electronic properties was studied by experiment and theoretical calculations. Notably, sila-annulated phenanthrene imides with significant aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties were observed.

A General Electrochemical Synthesis of Sulfonimidoyl Fluorides, Azides, and Acetates ESCI CSCD

Abstract :

Sulfonimidoyl fluorides, the aza-bioisostere of sulfonyl fluorides, are emerging as a promising link -age agent in the sulfur(VI) fluoride exchange reaction (SuFEx). However, conventional synthetic approaches typically require the use of either unstable sulfonimidoyl chlorides, toxic and corrosive sulfur fluorides, or expensive electrophilic fluorinating agents. Herein, we report an electrochemistry-en-abled oxidative nucleophilic fluorination of readily available and bench-stable sulfinamides using a com-mercially available and easy-to-handle triethylamine trihydrofluoride. With other nucleophilic agents, this electrochemical approach also serves as a general approach to diverse sulfonimidoyl derivatives, including sulfonimidoyl azides and acetates.

Abstract :

The design and synthesis of photoactive macrocyclic molecules continue to attract attention because such species play important roles in supramolecular chemistry as well as photoelectronic applications. Donor -acceptor (D-A) conjugated macrocycles are an emerging class of photoactive molecules due to their D-A conjugated structural characteristics and tunable optical properties. In addition, the well-defined cavities in such D-A macrocycles endow them with versatile host-guest properties. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of D-A conjugated macrocycle chemistry, detailing recent progress in the area of synthetic methods, optical properties, host-guest chemistry and applications of the underlying chem-istry to chemical sensors, bioimaging and photoelectronic devices. Abstract :

Four o-carborane-based aggregation-induced emission molecules with ultra-large Stokes shifts were designed and synthesized. To explore the origin of the ultra-large Stokes shifts (Delta lambda approximate to 268-294 nm) of the four target molecules, a new molecule named CZ-Ph-PO was synthesized by replacing the o-carborane unit in CZ-CB-PO with a benzene ring. It was found that the ultra-large Stokes shift was the result of the combined action of diphenylphosphinyl and o-carborane, in which o-carborane was the key group. In addition, combined with the single crystal structure analysis, the effect of halogens on molecular photophysical properties was investigated. Our work provides a reference for the design and synthesis of o-carborane-based fluorescent molecules with ultra-large Stokes shifts.

Abstract :

The discovery and creation of new carbon materials have motivated the evolution of technology. Carbon is one of the central elements, due to the characteristics of carbon atoms and varying electron configurations, diverse molecules will be discovered and formed. The structures and arrangements of carbon atoms in molecules have a significant impact on their properties. Nanocarbon molecules, as novel carbon materials with excellent properties, have found promising applications in nanotechnology, electronics, optics, and biomedical fields. In the past four decades, the discovery and creation of new variety of nanocarbon materials have opened up a new path to advanced science and technology. This paper focuses on the study of the structural characteristics of nanocarbon molecules with novel topological structures, and the way to achieve full synthetic control over these structures that are reported in recent years.

Cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) and carbon nanobelts (CNBs) represent some of the most iconic cyclic molecular nanocarbons in recent chemistry owing to their unique properties derived from rigid, strained, and cyclic p-conjugated systems. In the last decade, the synthesis of various sizes of CPPs and CNBs has been achieved that allowed not only for investigating their size-dependent properties and strategically using such properties in various applications but also understanding the fundamental features of cyclic p-conjugated systems and molecular nanocarbons in general. Herein, we report on the synthesis, size-dependent properties, and paratropic belt currents of methylene-bridged [n]cycloparaphenylenes ([n]MCPP, n = 6, 8, 10). [8]MCPP and [10]MCPP were synthesized by the same strategy we developed for [6]MCPP synthesis. With readily available ethoxy-substituted pillar[8]arene and pillar[10]arene as precursors, [8]MCPP and [10]MCPP were successfully synthesized in three steps consisting of de-ethylation, triflation, and nickel-mediated aryl-aryl coupling. The structural and electronic properties of MCPPs were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, absorption/fluorescence measurements, X-ray crystallographic analyses, and computational studies, revealing their interesting sizedependent properties. The differences in the size dependency between MCPPs and CPPs reflect the belt-form features of MCPPs, namely, methylene-bridging effects on MCPPs. Moreover, an interesting paratropic belt current along the MCPP backbone has been uncovered both experimentally and theoretically. The 1H NMR chemical shifts of MCPPs confirmed the presence of a paratropic belt current, whose strength rapidly decreases with increasing nanobelt size.
