Abstract:

Photocatalytic selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a promising technology for biomass conversion under mild conditions. However, photoinduced reactive oxygen species can over-oxidize HMF, making it hard to achieve both high selectivity and efficiency. Here, CdS nanosheets modified by Ag clusters (2.86 nm) were constructed with the assistance of natural light (Ag/CdS-NL) to achieve photocatalytic HMF directional oxidation coupled with H2O2 evolution. Characterization results and DFT calculations reveal that Ag clusters as active switches effectively enhance the adsorption of O2 and lower the energy barrier of the *OOH intermediate, which determines the 2e− oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to H2O2. The H2O2 evolution rate can reach 3900 μmol g−1 h−1. This oxygen reduction process effectively reduces the generation of ·O₂− radicals in the reaction system, significantly improving the selectivity of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF). This work offers a new strategy for achieving efficient HMF selective oxidation by manipulating the 2e− ORR to H2O2 over Ag clusters. © 2025
