Abstract:

Under cyclic loading, deformation and crack propagation occur, resulting in the damage accumulation and propagation of cracks, potentially causing corrosion of exposed steel bars and structural deterioration. This study improves the crack resistance of the beam under cyclic loading by replacing conventional concrete with ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) in the tensile region of the beam and bonding carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate to mitigate the crack localization phenomenon. Meanwhile, the mechanical response of the composite beam is studied. The experimental parameters of this study include the replacement height of UHPC (0 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm) and whether CFRP plates are bonded. Findings indicate that incorporating UHPC and CFRP enhances load capacity and stiffness, delaying crack initiation and propagation while mitigating stiffness degradation. Compared with the conventional concrete beam, when the UHPC replacement height is 200 mm, the cracking load increases by 33.3 % and the ultimate load increases by 26.0 %. For the pure UHPC beam, the cracking load increases by 77.8 % and the ultimate load increases by 48.8 %. For beams with the same UHPC replacement height, after bonding CFRP plates, the cracking load increases by 33.3 %, 33.3 %, and 25 %, respectively. Based on experimental data, a cohesive zone model considering residual plasticity of the concrete and the concrete-CFRP interface is developed and implemented, demonstrating high accuracy. © 2024 Institution of Structural Engineers
