Abstract:
Environmental degradation has become a global issue that requires recent studies' emphasis. Non-renewable energy is a significant factor in environmental degradation. Thus, policymakers have switched their focus towards promoting renewable energy production and consumption in all economic activities to secure low carbon economies. Given this scenario, the present study aims to investigate the effect of energy consumption (both renewable energy and non-renewable energy) on carbon emissions under Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in the world's next fastest emerging economies named N-11 economies over the period 1990 to 2020. The present research has employed the recently intro-duced Method of Movement Quantile Regression approach to examine the association among the var-iables. The study's primary findings reveal that the consumption of renewable energy has significant contribution in environmental quality improvement at all quantiles (0.10-0.90) whereas non-renewable consumption has positive contribution in deterioration of the environmental quality only at lower quantiles (0.10-0.40). Moreover, the effect of economic growth turns from positive to negative at me-dium to higher quantiles (0.10-0.30), which is an indication of the validity of Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in these countries. Various policies are recommended to the policymakers based on the findings of the study.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
