Abstract:
Inductor operating at high frequency in several hundreds kHz range of power converter will cause severe winding loss and high temperature rise. Based on analysis of winding loss components, a novel core structure with distributing magneto-motive force (MMF) is proposed for structure of high frequency power inductors, in which low permeability magnetic film is introduced in-between high permeability gapped core leg and windings to build auxiliary magnetic path. In new structure, magnetic field in winding window area is distributed more uniform than that of simple lumped air-gap. structure, resulting in reduction of AC winding loss greatly. Comparing with previous core structures, new structure can be constructed very easily with flexible polymer composite. Finite element simulations are performed to analyze and verify winding loss reduction for novel core structure. Design guidelines and experiments results are also given.
