Abstract:

The uncertainty and accuracy can not be considered in the finite element (FE) updating, and the FE model validation a development of the FE model updating. In the two-paper series, the methods of FE model validation were established. As one of the key problems in the FE model validation, the model updating method based on the response surface model was developed. Several key steps, such as the design of experiments, parameter screening, selection of response surface model and model accuracy inspection, were included. Using the online bridge health monitoring system of the Xiabaishi bridge, the finite element model updating based on the response surface model was conducted successfully. It can be concluded that the results from the updated model are in good agreement with the measurements, with the maximum error being no larger than 6%. The updated finite element model can be employed for model validation, bridge health monitoring and safety evaluation.
