Hydroxylation of naphthalene by photo-fenton and photo-fenton-like reaction

Abstract:

Naphthol was prepared using H 2O 2, acetonitrile, Fe(NO 3) 3·9H 2O, FeSO 4·7H 2O as reagents in photo reactor. Hydroxylation of naphthalene using Photo-Fenton and Photo-Fenton-like reactions was investigated. Parameters effecting the photocatalytic process such as the concentration of Fe 2+, the concentration of Fe 3+, the concentration of H 2O 2, and reaction time were studied. When the concentration of Fe 2+ was 1.5 mmol/L, the concentration of H 2O 2 was 0.8 mol/L, the conversion of naphthalene reached 43%, and the yield of 1-naphthol reached 2.8% in the Photo-Fenton reaction. When the concentration of Fe 3+ was 4.5 mmol/L, the concentration of H 2O 2 was 0.2 mol/L, the conversion of naphthalene reached 17%, and the yield of 1-naphthol reached 4.6% in Photo-Fenton-like reaction. When the concentration of H 2O 2 increased to 1.0 mol/L, the conversion of naphthalene reached 90%, but the yield of 1-naphthol decreased in photo-Fenton-like reaction.
