Substitution reactions of the quinolyl-functionalized hydrogenase model complexes [(μ-SCH 2 C 9 H 6 N) 2 Fe 2 (CO) 6 ] (1) or [(μ-SCH 2 C 9 H 6 N)(μ-SCH 2 C 9 H 6 N-η)Fe 2 (CO) 5 ] (2) by triphenylphosphine (PPh 3 ), bis (diphenylphosphino) methane (dppm) and trimethylphosphine (PMe 3 ) have been investigated. These reactions produced either the mono-substituted complexes [(μ-SCH 2 C 9 H 6 N) 2 Fe 2 (CO) 5 (PPh 3 )] (3), [(μ-SCH 2 C 9 H 6 N) 2 Fe 2 (CO) 5 (dppm)] (4), or the disubstituted one [(μ-SCH 2 C 9 H 6 N) 2 Fe 2 (CO) 4 (PMe 3 ) 2 ] (5). The three new phosphine substituted derivatives have been fully characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, IR, 1 H and 31 P NMR spectroscopic techniques. The molecular structures of 3-4 were further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The electrochemical behavior of 1-5 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The protonation study of complex 5 with HBF 4 ·OEt 2 was also investigated by IR and low temperature NMR. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
