Abstract:

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a new generation of video coding standard that was officially released in 2013. Its purpose is to address the growing demand for high-definition and ultra-high definition videos. HEVC provides a more efficient coding algorithm. However, it brings a highly complex encoding computation in intra coding. In this paper, a fast intra-prediction mode selection algorithm is proposed to reduce the coding complexity. The rough mode decision (RMD) candidate list is improved by analyzing the prediction unit (PU) mode correlation; then the probability of the candidate modes to be selected as the optimal mode is made full use of to further reduce the number of modes join in the Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) process. Experimental results show that the algorithm only increases the bitrate by 0.38%, while reduces the average time by 28.7%. © 2018 IEEE.
