Abstract:

The commonly used normal reinforced concrete pile (RC) has large stiffness and is not suitable to be used for foundation in integral abutment bridge (IAB). This paper proposes a segmental pile by combining RC pile as its lower portion and UHPC (ultra-high performance concrete) pile as its upper portion in order to increase the lateral flexibility. A trial design of an IAB using this new kind pile is performed in this paper by replacing the original 70cm × 50 (70) cm RC section at the top 3m of pile by 30cm × 30cm UHPC section. FEM of the whole bridge is then established by using software Midas. Analysis result shows that UHPC-RC segmental pile as a new type pile is suitable to be used in IAB. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
