Abstract:
In order to obtain a better understanding of the mechanical behaviour of concrete-filled steel tubular arches with corrugated steel webs, experimental studies on two concrete-filled steel tubular arches with corrugated steel webs subjected to in-plane loading symmetrically and asymmetrically were conducted. The load versus deformation responses of both of the arches were recorded, including the strain development in the steel tubes and corrugated steel webs under gradually increasing load. Both arches were found to fail in an in-plane mode well after the maximum strain in the steel tube reached its yield strain. These tests provide important information regarding the manifestation of the bearing limit state and also afford an opportunity to verify finite-element modelling techniques for use in a parametric study. The parametric study reveals that the load-carrying capacity is influenced by many factors including the rise-to-span ratio, slenderness ratio and grade of the in-filled concrete. The analyses described in this paper should be of interest to designers of corrugated web girders for both building and bridge applications.
