Abstract:
The bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) was synthesized via chemical route. The impact of the synthesis conditions, particularly the concentrations of organic solvent, on the nano-structure and field emission characteristics of the Bi2O3 were investigated. The nano-structures of the Bi2O3 arrays, screen printed on metal substrate, were characterized with scanning electron microscopy. The preliminary results show that the concentrations of organic solvent significantly affect the nano-structures and its field emission properties. For example, the array of well-defined Bi2O3 nano-wire with tens of μm long and 50 nm in diameter, synthesized with a solvent of 3 ml oleic acid, 3 ml heptane, and 10 ml acetone, had a lower on-set field (2.6 V/μm) and a higher field enhancement factor (2160) than the other two Bi2O3, which were prepared in different concentrations and looked like bundles of nano-rod resembling 'green-beans' with or without surface dendritic structures, respectively.
