Abstract:

Dumbbell-shaped section is often used in concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) arch rib; whereas great stress is likely to produce cracks in the weld sealing between steel tube and web plates when concrete is filling into the web space. Therefore a new type dumbbell section is proposed, in which instead of concrete in the web space is the stiffening H-shape steels. Analysis indicates that the possibility of broken accident is very small because no concrete will fill into the web space in this new type dumbbell section. Experimental research on CFST stubs with new type dumbbell sections subjected to axial loads are carried out. Research results indicate that CFST stubs with new type section behaves similarly to those with traditional section and its ultimate load-carrying capacity can be estimated with the same methods.
